Niv-Mizzet Reborn , gold or garbage? I've been interested in this card since it's printing for a few reasons. First, the art is intense. A very cool re-imagination of a legendary dragon that has been traditionally portrayed as somewhat gimmicky and cartoonish. Second, it's 5-color, the possibilities are endless! you can do whatever you want with it. Third, the card advantage is insane if you're lucky enough to hit 3-4 different color combinations in the top 10. Considering all of this, it raises the question of just because you can, does it mean you should? Some immediate downsides to the card are obvious. First, being 5 color, the mana base is either going to be very expensive and inconsistent, or you have to make it base green and hope you get there with ramp spells, or have to play Fires of Invention . Second, what archetype does this creature fall into? Is it mid-ranged or control? Is it a viable option over other card advantage engines that take less work to get going? Finally, because you're attempting to draw many cards off of this guy, do you play as many different color combinations as you can? Or centralize the combinations to do specific things? I've seen a lot of Standard format decks on arena try to make this card work and usually, it doesn't. It's usually too slow or doesn't have the right answers. However, if we look to Pioneer, does it fit? Can it be good? What tier deck could it possibly produce? Elvish Mystic and Llanowar Elves are both legal in this format as well as Chromatic Lantern and Dragon's Hoard . With those cards in a green based deck, you could have turn 3 Niv-Mizzet Reborn . What are your thoughts?

A possible turn 3 6/6 is always nice but this Niv seems more like a utility to me rather than a build around. You want to use him to dig through and find what your deck is actually trying to do. He doesn't protect himself in any way from removal and even though Dive Down is legal in Pioneer, you really don't want to play this Niv with a lot of mono colored cards since his ability specifically works with color pairs.

Fires of Invention might be a good card to cheat this out with and then just make a Rainbow Goodstuff deck. Not sure how competitive it would be, but you might get a pat on the back for the effort of trying to make it work.
