Urzas Saga

Modern forum

So returning to magic one of the first things I’ve noticed in this new landscape is every single deck runs Urza's Saga. Do you think the card will be banned? I hate the idea having to spend a mandatory 150$ for a play set just to play modern, seems unhealthy for the format

I don't expect Urza's Saga to get banned, at least in the near future. It is expensive, and it has a lot of tricks (it's a land, so it can't be countered; it's better in multiples; it's a tutor; etc.) but it's far from the most expensive or powerful card.

The mana base of a Modern deck is almost always the most expensive part. Misty Rainforest and the other fetchlands, Cavern of Souls, Spirebluff Canal and the other fast lands, Boseiju, Who Endures... It's possible for a 22-land mana base to be worth more than the rest of the deck.

Incidentally, I haven't noticed every deck using U's Saga. I've definitely seen some, maybe even many. Maybe that's a function of your local meta?

Of course, I could be completely wrong. I was cheerfully working on two separate reanimator brews and updating Dredge when Faithless Looting got hit.

legendofa is probably right in that it won't get banned soon, but it is certainly a card to watch out for in the future.

It's very good, but its value is more general and not game-warping, is the best way I can put it.

And yeah, I haven't seen it in every Modern deck I've come across, but it has been in quite a few now that I think about it. I've seen Voltron that runs it, I've seen affinity decks that run it, heck, I've even seen Merfolk decks that run it.

I don’t see Saga getting banned at all. There are a lot of ways to deal with it, all of which can be particularly punishing. There’s also at least a half-a/-dozen other cards that are more disruptive to the format that would probably eat a ban first - and many of these aren’t worth banning either.

The only card i’m expecting to see a ban at somepoint is one of either Omnath or W&6, based on Wotc stance on 4-colour-piles, combined with Omnath making every other kind of Midrange plan feel inferior. The main deck featuring these two cards is also the second-most-played archetype, and sports a dangerous 56% win rate

Saga is one of the most powerful lands printed in a long time, and can take over games on its own, but it incidentally dies to all sorts of hate.

I agree with wallisface that something in money pile is probably next; if at all. However, I could also see Yorion being a candidate, as it's a very strong payoff for running 20 more cards than normal.

Well, first welcome back to magic : ) And yeah, really it's just a very good card that happened to be in a set that got speculated into oblivion. On a power level it is probably not game breaking enough to get a ban (I think at least) but people bought into MH2 hard.

But they will probably reprint these things, whether it's in a secret lair or some other way. The demand for MH2 cards is high enough that it's really just a matter of when they get reprinted.

So, hard to say. If you want to play competitive and you want to use a strategy that really maxes saga, then it's a little irking. But if you just want to play some modern, right now would probably be the worst time to buy Urza's Saga and I don't know, there's always burn : ) Or just take your revenge on saga with tribal and Masked Vandal

Just my opinion. Not too sure how true it is that it will get a reprint, but it really seems like it would be a target for it.

I don’t think it will get banned. If they had a semi-limited list in modern, I would nominate it and all the other overplayed MH2 cards, so we can move away from modern horizons constructed block.

It’s a relatively safe investment, since there’s going to be demand in commander and other formats for the card.

I don’t think it is a required card in any archetype, but it does add some power to some.
