Path to exile - Selfless spirit

Let's say I have a Selfless Spirit on board. If I target it with Path to Exile to ramp and then I sacrifice Selfless Spirit in response for some reason (maybe I'm blocking the opponent's creatures), would I still be able to search for a land for the effect of Path to Exile?
I imagined. I was hoping that the second part of its effect would still resolve, but I had that feeling.

If it were worded like so:
"Exile Target Creature"
"Target opponent may search their library for up to one basic land card and put it into play tapped. If they do, they shuffle their library."
In two separate paragraphs, then it would work that way if your opp Pathed your ghost. They'd need a lot of text to make it so it still worked on the targeted creature and that creature's controller.

If it would specify "target opponent", then its always the opponent who gets the land, even if you exiled your own creatures.

No. When path resolves there is no longer a legal target so it will fizzle
