what is the better option?

I have a pretty traditionally built Jeskai Control deck and happened to pick up a few copies of March of Otherworldly Light for a couple bucks and was considering swapping it in over Rip Apart.

  • March of Otherworldly Light is instant speed but I imagine would cost me a card in my hand... but should be pretty relevant removal for the cost.

  • Rip Apart is definite removal for artifacts/enchantments but sorcery speed...

Im thinking March of Otherworldly Light is a better fit here but was just curious if anyone else agreed with my thought process.

Keeping in mind these cards are your sideboard slots, I think March gives a lot more flexibility. It can kill stuff like W&6 (which Rip can’t), as well as remove Urza’s Saga for one mana.

It comes down to how fast your meta is, versus how grindy it is. March is a superior option for quickly ensuring your opponents board state is kept under control, though if most your meta are decks of attrition, then the card disadvantage it can create might be a problem. Rip is far weaker in application, and likely to severely mess with your own tempo, but if your meta is quite slow then this might be less of an issue.

Personally I think March should be better 90% of the time, but i think the call is probably meta-dependant

I completely forgot about hitting Urza's Saga for ... that's amazing.

I'd recommend March over Rip Apart. March is never going to be the most efficient removal spell, but it's among the most versatile. For a lot of the artifacts you're most worried about (i.e. anything out of Hammer Time including the namesake card) require an instant speed answer of some kind.

personally i wouldn't run either, but i think march is definitely better in a 3 color deck unless somehow all your cards are multicolored and white, which likely isn't happening since jeskai control demands Lightning Bolt and Counterspell at a minimum. being able to kill w6 isn't worth 2 for 1'ing yourself imo. if you need enchantment/artifact removal, Disenchant is the same mana cost as rip part, but an instant. if you need creature removal, run Path to Exile. even Prismatic Ending would be a better option if you "really" want to be able to remove all 3 in a single spell.

i meant Rip Apart is better in 3 colors, not march.

wallisface March of Otherworldly Light can't kill Wrenn and Six. That's Prismatic Ending you're probably talking about, or maybe the wrong March (March of Wretched Sorrow which wouldn't be played in a Jeskai deck). March of Light explicitly mentions target artifact, creature or enchantment. It's great against tokens, and artifact-/creaturelands. Killing an opposing Celestial Colonnade for just is great. But no planeswalkers, unless they turn into creatures.

Yeah I noticed that mistake earlier too but it's all good.... if it did it planswalkers though that would be awesome.

plakjekaas yeah good catch & my mistake - oops.

It feels like i need to re-evaluate my comparison of the two cards also, taking that into account. It probably means Rip Apart is the more useful sideboard option unless your meta is especially rife with Urza's Saga, or you’re having problems dealing with the monke

I think the best reason for March of Otherworldly Light over Rip Apart is Hammer time decks... hitting Urza's Saga, Inkmoth Nexus, Colossus Hammer or even just somthing else to hit that stupid Giver of Runes with relative ease and at instant speed...

the main selling point for Rip Apart was supposed to be the flexibility for what targets it can hit... but ironically the sorcery speed really makes things awkward sometimes... heck even Expressive Iteration can feel awkward/risky sometimes and that card is clearly amazing.
