Tuning my mono-green deck

Modern Deck Help forum

I have been playing with this mono-green deck for a while and it has been doing surprisingly well. Aspect of Hydra is insane in this deck and a single unblocked creature can straight up kill your opponent. Rancor is either really good or really bad. Strangleroot Geist, Garruk's Companion and Leatherback Baloth are all great but can be hard to cast with my insistence on the colorless utility lands. Treetop Village has won games on its own and Ghalta, Primal Hunger has been hilarious against decks that don't run Path to Exile. The other cards have all been fine, except Nylea, which is likely coming out for sure. I think I'd rather run Rhonas the Indomitable if we're comparing God to God. Champion of Lambholt is a pet card of mine and has won a good chunk of games for me.

I'd really appreciate some feedback as the deck is missing something. Perhaps there are too many lands? I also could use some more trample creatures since I often find myself stonewalled by Lingering Souls when trying to eek out the last couple points of damage. Sideboard is also kind of medium. I put in a lot of artifact hate, but it's not as diverse as it needs to be in a metallic such as modern.

I appreciate all feedback and happy brewing!

Stomp what you're doing

Havent looked at your list, but in green Marrow Shards can be a good SB card for Souls.

Scavenging Ooze would probably be good as well. I'm not a fan of Experiment One myself.

as you said your deck lacks consistency due to the fact that you are using these utility lands.. you are here to end the game as quick as possible not to stall out games.. who cares if they discard 1 card from your hand just draw another card rather than drawing what they have discarded.. just drop them threat after threat..

also by putting a field of ruin you are setting yourself back a turn or 2 as well..

I have to agree with the comments on your deck's comment page: Where in God's name are your Avatar of the Resolute? Mono-Green Stompy is built around Avatar of the Resolute and relies on it for getting things done. It makes your Experiment Ones, Scavenging Oozes, and Strangleroot Geists do even more work. It even makes Young Wolf viable.

Champion of Lambholt is cute but as you say, it's a pet card. The problem is that it's taking up room.

I'm also not a fan of Overwhelming Stampede and so many Blossoming Defense. The only pump spells that I would use besides Aspect of Hydra are Mutagenic Growth or Vines of Vastwood.

Cutting this excess fat makes room for Avatar of the Resolute, Groundbreaker, Hardened Scales, Narnam Renegade, Dungrove Elders, and so on.

I also don't think you're getting much benefit from your mana base. Nephalia Academy and Field of Ruin are kind of ho-hum in this deck. You can board in Acidic Slime, Beast Within, or Mwonvuli Acid-Moss. You don't care about counterspells because you can board in Thrun, the Last Troll, Skylasher, Great Sable Stag, and Choke. I'd drop down to 19 lands and play a 3rd. Treetop Village. Everything else should be Forests.

The other utility land that's viable instead of the 3rd. Treetop Village is Oran-Rief, the Vastwood.
