Thursday Night Magic : What to play?

Modern Deck Help forum

Tomorrow night I am crawling out of my cave and going to attend a Modern night at my local game store. I am excited and nervous at the same time because I haven't attended any form of magic in person in years...

That being said I am going in blind not really knowing what to come across. I know/expect it to be a small number of participants after seeing the players last week (there seemed to be 3 different games of magic being played and others playing D&D)....my gut just tells me to expect Living End...just a hunch.

I have a few decks/variations that im considering using tomorrow and basically wanna know which of the following would you pick if you were playing under these circumstances.

TL;DR

  • Which of these decks should I play?

Naya One Drop/Small Zoo

Jeskai Saheeli combo

Jeskai Control

Jeskai Jank

I think you “Jeskai Saheeli combo” has the best odds of winning games, personally. But it will obviously come down to the meta.

Piloting a deck well is more important than having the best deck in Modern, so i’d suggest going with whatever deck you feel most comfortable with and enjoy playing.

i think my comfort zone is between zoo and saheeli.... I have the most expirience playing those two decks... but somthing just feels wrong about playing combo for my maiden voyage back to playing in person again.....but also feel it has the best chance to win games.... hopefully afterwards i can at least get a feel for what people play at this store and adjust from there.

I looked at all 4 decks, I’d go with either Combo or the “Jank” deck but I’d swap a few things around probably cutting some Helix for Supreme Verdict/Settle the Wreckage and Force of Negation

I don’t think Spell Queller is the greatest outside of spirits

Start with Jank and after getting a better idea of the meta/pod, go from there.

I would say Zoo, but I'm not sure you want to base your decision on my nostalgia :)

I MADE TOP 8! ... Out of 8 players I placed 8th; 3 rounds of best of 3 Swiss.

Round 1 Vs. Affinity 0-2: Seemed like a pretty straightforward U/W Affinity deck... Urza's Saga is one heck of a card.

Round 2 Vs. Mono White tokens 0-2: This was a deck based on a saffron olive brew utilizing Esper Sentinel with Force of Virtue and Mana Tithe.

Round 3 Vs. Eldrazi Tron 2-1: This seemed to be a pure eldrazi list.... Reality Smasher and company with Ugin planswalkers and Walking Ballista.

Granted I placed last but all my games really felt winnable; I was honestly pretty nervous for some reason and could/should have played better...heck i was frazzled just trying to figure out how to use the companion app because its the first I've ever seen it before lol...But I had a blast... I was kinda caught up in just the thrill and joy of playing in person for the first time since the original Zendikar set which apparently was over 10 years ago now!?!?!?... Gideon of the Trials with Pact of Negation is hilarious and was amazed that I pulled that combo off in 2 different games. I was able to interact well in all my games but lacked an offensive presence and or was not able to capitalize on a momentum shift after big plays like Settle the Wreckage.... I came pretty close but just couldn't quite close games out

Icbrgr if you’re wanting tips on how to improve one of your decks, let us know - there’s probably a bunch of fine-tuning improvements to make :)

I guess the biggest part will be just playing more games also - to shake-off that nervousness and become more familiar with your local meta.
