Spells for a B/G Spider/Scorpion Deck

Modern Deck Help forum

I'm building a Black-green spider and scorpion deck but I'm currently stuck when it comes to what spells I should be using. I have a couple of Arachnus Web that goes well with my Arachnus Spinner as well as a bunch of Rancor, Terrifying Presence , Spider Spawning , Abrupt Decay, etc. I'm not too sure about my selections especially since I have scorpions mixed in as well.

I'm not necessarily aiming to make this a tournament-winning competitive deck but at least trying not to make it some randomly cobbled-up mess. Would appreciate some help.

The first card we need to be looking at is Ishkanah, Grafwidow. That can help you close out games. Apart from that, you need general discard and removal to fill the graveyard for Ishkanah's delirium clause. Fatal Push, Inquisition of Kozilek, etc.

Arachnogenesis is also a card that exists.

That one isn't Modern legal.

Hmm Fatal Push is out of my budget at the moment and so is Inquisition of Kozilek if I were to buy a playset of it. I was thinking of Ultimate Price or Victim of Night as a replacement for Fatal Push and Despise to replace Inquisition of Kozilek

Also would Stab Wound and Hideous Visage work with this?Stab Wound = for defensive plays since a majority of my creatures have deathtouch and high toughnessHideous Visage = When I'm on the offensive

For casual, sure. For competitive you are asking for removal.

Well, I did say that I wasn't planning on making this a highly competitive deck. It's more on the lines of local store matches with colleagues. Besides, there are a few ways I can counter removals depending on the nature of the removal.

I like Putrefy if you aren't planning to make it competitive. Relatively cheap removal that hits artifacts and stops regeneration.

Spiders is a pretty mean tribal if you can build it properly. They can play very long games and then finish kind of fast-ish. Let's be honest: they're slow as fuck, but fun to play. I have a spider list you should have a look at. I haven't included any scorpions, but i'm still thinking about a scorpion deck.

Afraid of Spiders? Better run.

Do you already have a prototype list to look at? Otherwise, i'd love to be summoned if you ever upload it here.

Thanks for the help guys. I posted my prototype deck here.

B/G Spider/Scorpion (Prototype)

It's pretty bad I know. But it's a start, I guess. Feedback greatly appreciated.

I would put in an Assault Formation and take out a Kessig Recluse. Try to ad the giant growths too, because a lot of people wouldn't be too sad to let one or two damage in, and they wouldn't want to lose a creature to the deathtouch, so it would be easy to do at least 4 or 5 damage quick with Deadly Recluse+Giant Growth. Maybe some Mutagenic Growths and Seal of Strengths as well? Those are both pretty inexpensive.

Yes, I see where you're going with that. Adding in some of the +X/+X spells certainly would give me both a defensive AND offensive advantage. I suppose I could sub out some of the creatures in place of them. I had a feeling I had too many creatures and lacking some of the more important spells. Thanks!

Have you considered going the wither/infect route? For example, Juvenile Gloomwidow, Obelisk Spider, and Blightwidow are all spiders with wither/infect. There's Contagion Clasp which is basically just spider-shaped jewelry, and if you're willing to branch out and include cards that could be thematically connected to spiders (for example write Devoted Druid off as devoted to spiders, Poison Ivy style) then you could make an interesting wither control deck. Throw in some other creepy creatures with wither/infect such as Blight Mamba, add some spells that play with -1/-1 counters, such as Crumbling Ashes, and you've got a workable, if inefficient, spider deck. Or you could make a red/blue spider deck and be a spider man. ;D

Haha coincidental that you mentioned a spider or almost-spider themed wither/infect deck. I just finished my green/blue infect deck a few weeks ago so making a second deck with wither or infect seems a little redundant and boring to me. Thanks for the suggestion though
