Jeskai Prowess Advice

Modern Deck Help forum

I was perusing Tappedout to see what sorts of new decks are around since the release of Modern Horizons 2 and I came across a Jeskai Prowess deck that I fell in love with and had to make it mine.

I am currently toying with the idea of ditching Lurrus of the Dream-Den in favor of main decking Jeskai Ascendancy but im not sure if its practical or not... other non-Lurrus builds ive seen use Stormwing Entity which is definitely powerful as well.

overall just playtesting and am open to suggestions.

Typically Jeskai Ascendancy is its own separate deck, relying on that card to combo off, and having nothing to do with Prowess.

I don’t think the card has any place in Prowess - and if you’re set on using it, its better off used in it’s own combo-archetype

Stormwing, in my opinion, just isn't good enough after Unholy Heat being released. Murktide is a lot better, at least in the decks it's good in.

And yeah, I'll second that Ascendancy is literally unplayable outside of combo, and even the combo deck is a fringe build.

yeah think thats all pretty fair... probaby better off with Light Up the Stage or Expressive Iteration maybe.

Yarp, fo sho. Either of those cards are right at home in Prowess.

I’ll also say Stormwing Entity is worth considering. Turn 2 Manamorphose into it is a very rude play and likely to blow out a lot of opponents - and even if it dies, the scry it offers often sets you up to continue being aggressive. I’m not sure whether it’s better than just playing Lurrus, but i think both avenues are fine to make a competitive deck from

I think i agree; im new to the deck and havent really played a lot in awhile... the deck doesn't seem to really be lacking in threat from what i can tell at this point...but who knows that jury is still out on stormwing/murktide. I just personally have a card drawing fetish and thats where ascendency came into play more than anything... im hardly bothered by lurrus' deck building restriction and option for a mana sink and the slim chance to recover from mass/spam removal seems pretty appealing.

Ascendancy outside of combo is a win-more card. It’s great when you’re ahead but awful when you’re behind.

yeah after another day of playtesting i feel silly about the thought of Jeskai Ascendancy...

Otherwise there is A LOT I really like about this strategy/decklist overall but it's definitely not perfect... its really explosive at times and other times clunky and Bipolar about being mana starved or mana flooded.

still tinkering with what the best list can be... not sure if im a poor/inexperienced pilot or if its just the nature of the deck as it is with the tools available. Light Up the Stage/Expressive Iteration are definlitly keepers to some ratio but there is an art to using them optimally im finding.

As with picking up any new deck, piloting it correctly is a large chunk of the "fine tuning" process. I'd recommend getting in a bunch of games, and making small changes very slowly. Your current list looks fine, so I suspect most of the problems you'll be having are all part of learning to pilot it, and/or getting your sideboard fixed to better suit your local meta.
