Modern Deck Help forum

Leather Wings is a deck I made years ago based around my two favorite creature types. Getting back into MTG, I want to make this an at least decent deck. General improvement tips are appreciated, but I have a few specific points I want to ask about:

Thanks for reading!

The thing about Dragons and Demons is that they are typically large creatures, and with its large size comes large mana cost. Most of the time you'll get run over by other fast decks before you can land your large creature. I can see your playing cards that accelerates your mana and reduces cost for your threats which helps, just not sure if its enough.

What I suggest is that instead of trying to cast your large threats, just cheat them out. You can play Tin Fins / Instant reanimator by using Goryo's Vengeance. Or cheat them from your hand by using cards like Through the Breach, Quicksilver Amulet, or Elvish Piper. Still not that fast, but at least you don't have to pay the full cost of the creature.

Another thing, don't just include large creatures just because they are hard-hitting in combat. Use creatures that have immediate impact upon entering the battlefield (like Griselbrand or Kokusho that you already have) or have abilities that seriously disrupts your opponent when not immediately answered (like Sire Of Insanity).

Just adding to the above points

  • modern decks typically want to always run 60 cards. Running more means more inconsistency, worse draws, and generally just a weaker deck. Try and force yourself down to a deck of 60 cards.

  • in modern the largest cmc card you’ll typically see is cmc4, usually less, and very seldom more. Even with some ramp, i don’t think you’d typically want more than 4 of your cards in a 60 card deck costing 4cmc or above

I think if you can cut the card pool down, and sort out your mana curve, you’ll already be a good way towards a stronger deck. I’ll refrain from any further advice without knowing how those changes look.

wallisface: there are still big mana decks in modern. Tron and Amulet titan run some really big creatures. Uro Omnath (the current top deck on mtggoldfish) runs Teferi, Hero of Dominaria and Hour of Promise.

Xianling69 agreed, but i don’t think that feedback helps to improve this Red-Black deck. Being able to run those bigger costing spells takes dedicated work, and I don’t think this kind of brew fairs well trying to run lots of big-mana cards.

wallisface: still, i think its disingenuous to imply that high cost cards aren't modern playable.

i think the bigger issue here that nobody is addressing, is that you can't just jam a bunch of creatures of the same type into a deck simply because you like that creature type. tribal decks need some sort of "creature type matters" card, like Sarkhan, Fireblood for dragons. you also shouldn't mix tribes.

Yeah, that’s a very good point. Too many people try to jam a tribe of creatures together when the creatures do nothing to help each other.

Thank you everyone for your feedback and honesty! I'll make some changes, but this deck just will not work too well it would seem. Oh well, learning Magic isn't just about knowing what does work, but also what doesn't. I appreciate the tips and honesty!
