Building a G/W Midrange

Modern Deck Help forum

I really like cards that are tied both to offense and defense, such as vigilance and life link. I tend to choose cards that can both be used to protect, and enable my creatures. I have a list of cards that look really appealing, some of which I already own. Are there are any potential decks here? I'm willing to drop some cash on cards, but anything over $20 per copy is out of the question.

Angelic Destiny: Normally I wouldn't rely on fat enchantments, but this one persists.

Batterskull: Normally high cost equipment doesn't doing anything when played, but this one can fight.

Bear Umbra: Pays for itself the turn you play it. Usually a 3 or 4 drop needs to have massive board power, but this one simply undoes its own cost instead.

Behemoth Sledge Them some sweet stats. Bit pricey though, but equipment persist.

Dungrove Elder Always strong and annoying to remove.

Elderwood Scion Nice flavor... that's all.

Emerge Unscathed Protection is a highly versatile effect, and rebound is icing on the cake.

Meglonoth Aw man, this is just too cool. Why's it so hard to drop him early? Hi does damage no matter whether his attacking or defending and he never has to stop doing either so long as you buff him up real good.

Nissa, Worldwaker This card basically says: On turn 5 pay 1 to play it, then have 4 more mana every turn from then on.

Rancor Powerful, reliable, persistent

Ready / Willing Offense? Defense? Both?

Selesnya Charm Oh wow, this does a lot. Pump, removes anything bigger than your guys, or drops a blocker. Hot damn.

Spirit Loop Never not life link.

Sun Titan Three drops can be incredibly strong, and he brings one or more back? Sign me up.

Valorous Stance Versatile card that can save your creature or remove another. Do like.

Vines of Vastwood WOW this card is verastile. Defend your guys, buff them, or even deny an enemy targeting his OWN CREATURE. Now that's just crazy.

Before I can give any sort of advice, are you wanting stricly G/W? Are other colors good? What's up in that regard.

@ car: While I'm not against proxying until I finish a deck, I'm not dropping the cash for tarmogyf or voice of resurgence. (as much as I want a play set of voices, it applies so much pressure)

@ TheFoilAjani: No, not specifically g/w. I don't mind mixing in any other colors, it's just that green and white bring together a lot of my favorite elements in magic: Big creatures, lifelink, vigilance, versatility, and persistence. Therefore, G/W is my starting point.

So reliably playing a 6 drop seems pretty much impossible in modern. It seems decks pretty much just have to revolve around 1 to 3 drops to win for the most part. That's disappointing, I wanted to drop big creatures with cool effects.

If you want to see a R/G list, I have one in my profile. It is pretty rampy while still being midrange.

I can probs give suggestions later today when i'm at my computer.

I see Kitchen Finks looks like a great card for stalling into late game, and with Birds of paradise it's a potential turn 2 drop. Undying and persist cards seem to do this job in general, but Finks are exceptionally good thanks to the life gain. I've also found Deadly Recluse is extremely deterrent.

I've been trying to ramp lands into play for Dungrove Elder, but it seems that just putting out straight mana is more reliable. I see you using Birds of Paradise, Sylvan Caryatid, and Xenagos, the Reveler

Okay, so I have a couple of minutes before I have to head to classes, so I can give you some suggestions;

If you're looking to go a more Midrange/ramp route, a G/W/X deck with Lotus Cobra and Knight of the Reliquary can easily ramp out t4 Primeval Titan or really any 8-9 drop;

T1 Forest

T2 Plains Lotus

T3 Fetch land, tap 2 lands for a Knight

T4 Fetch land, add a mana, crack 2 Fetches add 2 mana, tap your 4 lands, have 7 mana, cast PrimeTime, add 2 mana, crack a forest to Knight, grab a Slayers' Stronghold, 2mana floating, activate Strong hold, swing with PrimeTime, get 2 Fetches and cast a Lightning Helix or any 2 mana instant.

For a straight "Big Green" G/W Midrange, I would play Birds of Paradise, Loxodon Smiter, Scavenging Ooze, Kitchen Finks, Sun Titan, Knight otR, Batterskull, Wilt-Leaf Liege, and Lotus Cobra.

If you want to play Bant, it could be fun. Cards like Finks, BoP, Smiter, Scuze, and Batterskull are generally good. You could also play Noble Hierarch, Mirror-Sigil Sergeant, Vapor Snag and Magus of the Bazaar.

I hope this can help a least a little. If you have a specific list, I can help a lot more. Just send me a message.
