Blast of Genius

Modern Deck Help forum

Here's an old standard deck I used to play and love. I'd like to 'modernize' it. Basically, I'd ramp my mana up, discard fat cmc cards with Blast of Genius to KO my opponent as well as use X damage cards to clear the board/KO opponents. I've never made a modern deck, so it would be great for some people who know the format to help me out with suggestions. An old standard deck: Blast of Genius

What kind of budget are you looking at

Not worried about it really, as long as a card isn't like 400 dollars per.

Competitive Modern is a pretty fast format. You can probably get to 6 mana on turn 4 sometimes, but then you're probably dead before you can resolve 2 (or more) Blast of Genius to win. I'd say this strategy would be more effective in a Tron shell, but Tron has much better things to be doing with it's mana than this.

For more casual play, I'd add Sylvan Caryatid and/or Birds of Paradise, Temporal Mastery, and any other spells with modal casting costs that I can't think of right now.

Sad news indeed. No way to keep myself alive long enough to kill with Blast? :P

You can definitely pull this off. The problem is that there are just better cards.

Maybe you could try a spicy Nahiri Jeskai brew with Through the Breach and Blast of Genius being used to deal huge chunks of damage out of nowhere before finishing them off with smaller burn spells.

well i've played two versions of this. if you stick RU then you want lots of counterspells and deck manipulation. think Serum Visions and such. the point is to stall until you can cast your blasts usually into Temporal Mastery or Temporal Trespass.

or you can go GR ramp with Arbor Elfs, Elvish Mystics. then you can go with Vengeful Rebirth w/ loot effects and the like. just throwing in some massive creatures like Worldspine Wurm.

Not saying its impossible, just that the odds are against you. You don't really have meaningful interaction in the first 3 or 4 turns (since you're ramping), and Modern is a "turn 4 format" where games are often decided by that turn. After that point, you have cards that you win with, and cards that interact. If you're far enough behind, your "win" cards are dead because you can't win before they kill you. If you have a little breathing room, your interaction cards are dead because you're just killing them. As aholder7 says, you want to chose a route. Go ramp and kill them faster, or go control and interact with them until you're able to pull the trigger on the kill.

Alright! Now I'm getting motivated again. A few guys over at salvation shot down this idea without offering anything. The old standard deck list is not at all what it should be like now. I just posted it to see the idea I had back in the day. I want to build something around Blast of Genius now.

@DarkLaw, I made this thread to find out what those better cards could be. You've shown me a few and I thank you for that. Anyone other ideas?

One problem here though, I'm not understanding some of these terms as I've not played modern. Tron? Nahiri Jeskai brew? Let me google. Hehe.

Once I get a few more replies here, I'll start brewing.

What do you think of Riddle of Lightning DarkLaw?

I see! This Jeskai idea seems like a winner!

rhystictutor So long as you could stack your deck, which isn't practical in modern, you could try it. In all fairness though, Through the Breach, Blast of Genius and Nahiri should fill all the kill slots that you need. You would have to play around with the number of mainboard Emrakul. I think that it might be a 3- or 2-of.
