Recruiter of the Guard and Death & Taxes

Listen up Death & Taxes players! We have a new toy!

This beauty makes the Blood, Death & Taxes deck affordable! No longer do we need to drool over Imperial Recruiter, actually.. this card is better than Imperial Recruiter in a Death & Taxes list.

I create this thread to Brainstorm the possibilities of this new card. Lets go through a normal D&T list and see what cards of interest it can tutor for:

  • Aven Mindcensor: Not widely played, but that might change. This becomes a very powerful 1-of especially when your vial is at 3. Vial in Recruiter then flash Mindcensor in response to Natural Order or fetch..
  • Flickerwisp: Wisp is always good, and the synergy with recruiter is neat. Flicker the Recruiter for a new wisp each turn. This is one of the cards the new Recruiter can find, but Imperial Recruiter cant.
  • Mangara of Corondor: Not widely played, but with tutors it makes more sense to include as a 1-of. Get it if you have Karakas in play
  • Mother of Runes: probably not gonna be the target most of the times, but i can see some situations where mom could be just what you need..
  • Phyrexian Revoker: When you need one you probably really need it. Having a tutor for it seems very useful!
  • Spirit of the Labyrinth: Another card Imperial Recruiter cant find, but this new one can. Good when its good, otherwise mediocre. With the Recruiters this makes more sense to include as a 1-of
  • Stoneforge Mystic: Of course..
  • Thalia, Guardian of Thraben: Its probably too late to make an impact mid-late game, but you can fetch for it if you want :)
  • Containment Priest: After sideboard (sometimes played main). Having flash makes this really good, vial Recruiter and flash priest as response to Reanimate or Show and Tell

Other cards that you can find with Recruiter of the Guard:

(blue splash might push it tho, since both TNN and Clique cost double blue).

Does Stonecloaker become playable? At least as sideboard tech? Its a shame Eldrazi Displacer has 3 toughness, it would be such a fun combo :).

Any creature i missed? Lets discuss :)

This is awesome! I can't actually believe wizards color shifted Imperial Recruiter!

Is there any targetable creature that can bounce her every turn?

Shane.Allen says... #4

Wow what a great (functional) reprint! This is what I like seeing from Wizards, actually printing stuff people will use and making Legacy decks more affordable so more people play.

P.S., the fact that they changed it to a "may", in some situations it might be relevant.

Both Recruiter of the Guard and Magus of the Moon is human, so Cavern of Souls naming human not only gives you red for Magus of the Moon, it also makes both cards uncounterable :).

Good catch smackjack that's very useful :)

August 16, 2016 2:35 p.m.

smackjack says... #7

How many of this would a D&T list play? 3? 2?

August 16, 2016 2:56 p.m.

Shane.Allen says... #8

I say 3 if just using the new one, or do 2 of the new one 2 of the old one.

August 16, 2016 3:04 p.m.

smackjack says... #9

Yeah 3 is probably good. Im thinking removing 1 Flickerwisp (going down to 3), 1 Phyrexian Revoker (going down to 3.. that hurts as its really versatile, but its not necessarily needed early game and can be tutored if needed) and 1 Spirit of the Labyrinth (going down to 1).

It was $16 for preorder on Starcity games an hour ago. Now its sold out and raised to $25 :(. I hope this will be available and not too expensive..

Shane.Allen says... #10

Wow those prices spike fast don't they, well I hope your able to get them, I know I'll be looking for my people that want to use this in their decks, was also thinking that it is a really good card in the tiny leaders format.

August 16, 2016 3:28 p.m.

Note that Recruiter of the Guard isn't actually a functional reprint of Imperial Recruiter. The new one looks at toughness, whereas the original looks at power.

August 16, 2016 4:02 p.m.

Shane.Allen says... #12

Oh okay, I read it too fast, but it still grabs most of the same cards, so that's what's good about it, but it doesn't grab True-Name Nemesis and I don't like that.

EpicFreddi says... #13

No Shane, it does grab Nemesis. It wouldn't grab it if it were a 1/3.

August 16, 2016 4:12 p.m.

smackjack says... #14

Shane.Allen it does grab TNN, old one doesnt..

From what ive heard Painter's Servant and Dream Stalker is the cards you want that it cant get (but Imperial Recruiter can). Thats why Imperial Recruiter is still better in combo decks like Aluren. Recruiter of the Guard is better in Death & Taxes tho, as it finds all the same creatures but also Flickerwisp (!) and Spirit of the Labyrinth

August 16, 2016 4:12 p.m.

smackjack says... #15

... now the preorder price on SCG is $30. Still sold out but keeps rising :(. This bums me out, i hope the preorder price is highly inflated due to hype..

August 16, 2016 4:14 p.m.

Shane.Allen says... #16

smackjack Sorry about that, had the two reversed, I guess even I am hyping up the card. I think you have to run two of each in the deck to make it perfect. I know this is going to see play. I know mono-white Death & Taxes is going to get a boost out of this. I hope the price is a hyped up price, but with this being Conspiracy you never know. I am psyched for the reprint of Phyrexian Arena though.

August 16, 2016 4:24 p.m.

smackjack says... #17

Shane.Allen there is no reason to play Imperial Recruiter in D&T, so 2 of each aint perfect. Imperial Recruiter and Recruiter of the Guard does the same thing in the deck, except Recruiter of the Guard does it better (it finds Flickerwisp andSpirit of the Labyrinth, which Imperial Recruiter cant) :)

August 16, 2016 4:55 p.m.

Shane.Allen says... #18

Yes, but two of each or some mixture thereof would be useful against getting one of them Meddling Maged or having it taken out by Surgical Extraction. I just think two of the same thing is better than one.

August 16, 2016 4:59 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #19

This card could easily be well over $50.

August 16, 2016 5:06 p.m.

Shane.Allen says... #20

I agree on that :( we need cheaper cards so other people can play legacy !!! I want more flesh meat :)

August 16, 2016 5:08 p.m.

OpenFire says... #21

This card will settle under $20. Probably closer to $10. It's good but Conspiracy is print-on-demand. Exploration was over $20 at the time of the last Conspiracy but is about $5 now. This card is nuts, but $10 will be the end price.

I'm loving that this plays so nicely with the other recent addition to D&T, Thalia, Heretic Cathar.

What about legacy maverick? How many guards do you think it should run?

August 16, 2016 7:48 p.m.

So Imperial Taxes is now an outdated name? But as Legacy players you all should just call it Imperial Taxes because that's how stories of deck names form. Now Death&Taxes will certainly use this to their advantage. It looks pretty fit as there are really no 3 toughness creatures other than Serra Avenger that are played in Death&Taxes.

That aside I am wondering if a white splash in Aluren could replace the red splash for Imperial Recruiter. I could see an Aluren deck playing Gaddock Teeg (sideboard of course) Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Ethersworn Canonist, Qasali Pridemage and the list goes on. White just has infinitely more utility creatures than red. And we would replace Dream Stalker with Arctic Merfolk (credit to cythare for finding this). It is a downside that Arctic Merfolk only has 2 toughness though as then the combo could be disrupted by a Lightning Bolt. The new Recruiter of the Guard really does open up Aluren to a whole new world of fun. I would love to see where this goes.

All this aside, I wonder if you jammed 8 Recruiters into a deck what would you do with them? That said I would really like to see something crazy come out of a deck with 8 recruiters.

... and then we get this...

Seems really powerful! mainboard 1 in D&T? Recruiter of the Guard fetches it if needed :)

Shane.Allen says... #26

Wow I guess, WOTC is at it again, Making sure people are playing the decks they want us to play, I guess DnT won the vote this time. Come on wizards give my decks some love.

August 17, 2016 12:54 p.m.

@smackjack, There is a point in which we have to say no to a lot of these new cards because they are all 3 drops. It'll clunk up the curve a lot. That or start running mana acceleration like Chrome Mox. But if these new cards do warrant a slot what are Death&Taxes players looking to cut?

August 17, 2016 2:20 p.m.

smackjack says... #28

I think Serra Avenger is out. Its a good card with vial, but these new cards are pretty powerful. Also, down to 3 wisps and im cutting one of the 2 Spirit of the Labyrinths im playing in my list. Its gonna take some experimenting and testing but im sure both these cards will stick..

August 17, 2016 2:28 p.m.

malfeischylde says... #29

@smackjack DUNNO If someone said, but target #1 should be Flickerwisp for added value. Its bdcoming like a limited alluren combo piece in white. Someone is gonna shatter this in dt. Wisp can even blink marit lage from Dark Depths combo, making a dt game better pre board vs creatureless lands decks.
