New threat in legacy?

Legacy forum

I run a BG loam pox legacy deck that is super fun to play. As I was perusing the new DTK spoilers I noticed a card that interested me.

Risen Executioner

I currently run a singleton Tombstalker alongside a single Nether Spirit. I want your thoughts on whether risen executioner could take the tombstalker's spot as a finisher. I know it's harder to cast but it can be recurred and doesn't block my Nether Spirit from coming back from the grave for the rest of the game. Bloodghast is also an option but with risen executioner I can cast it without depending on landfall and it has a bigger swing. Is it worth testing out??

Yes, it's definitely worth testing. I had a similar thought when I saw it, but figured that it was just worse than Bloodghast. As a consistent 4 mana 4/3, it still dies to a lot, but it might just be better than tombstalker.

The four mana is really rough considering he cant block and doesnt have haste though. Bloodghast has conditional haste and doest require mana to cast so he is different

So in your opinion is Bloodghast or Tombstalker more value?

Yes

Eh. I don't really see this guy impacting Legacy too much. 4 CMC in the format is rather high, and it should be impactful. Exceptions are MUD, 12 Post, Reanimator, and S&T.

This guy isn't a Mindsculptor or Batterskull.

How would Tasigur work in Pox? Out of curiosity.

I honestly wouldn't consider Tasigur in pox. Yes, he comes down earlier than Tombstalker. However, he lacks evasion, has one less power, and I haven't found his ability to reuse cards from grave to be too useful for the mana investment. Expect to have your opponent gleefully give you stuff like Raven's Crime and Innocent Blood, the former you don't WANT back in your hand really and the latter you don't want when you have a legendary and non-recurrable creature on the field.

The reason bloodghast is great in pox is because he is recurring so you can play cards like smallpox without the fear of losing your threats. if you lose tasigur, he's gone.

Yeah, the ability to survive untargeted removal that hits all players is pretty much the key deciding factor for pox playability. It's why uber-budget pox is willing to play Chimeric Idol of all things.

@ppledger Hey! Uber-budget pox decks have feelings too!

the one thing ive noticed in the legacy being played where i am, and most of all the other stores is.. Rest in Peace is being played MAINDECK... because of all the "reanimate" being played.. Swords to Plowshares is your biggest threat, that i see... if you want to reanimate a threat, what about Griselbrand .. if you want to "cheat" it in, that would be your best bet. draw engine, lifelink.. and a 7/7 to boot... yea, swords can get it, but you can get 7 cards!! that is a huge advantage... Surgical Extraction, Extirpate are also big trouble... try to test it out, and see if it works for your deck, but as for a "finisher"... nope... there are alot of other better finishers out there....

@jandrobard Hey, I'm not dissing uber-budget pox. It's my deck of choice, after all. Chimeric Idol is just a really weird thing to be winning most of my games with. The fact that uber-budget pox can use it as a win condition is frankly an impressive feat. I must admit, though: the only thing I've found more fun than killing off opponents with the agonizing slowness of a pox deck is doing so while beating them to death with a 3/3 metal turtle. :P
