Why does Godsend not see play?

Doesn't do a damned thing. See Batterskull for an example of an equipment that does something.

I'm going to guess too much mana without immediately changing the game the way Batterskull does though that is literally a guess as I don't play legacy.

Because it's bad. It doesn't do anything at all. I'd rather play Bonesplitter

If it sticks it's pretty cool but cards like batterskull work bythemselves and this card is useless on its own

Plus, 3 mana is a lot in legacy. It better be winning you the game for the price you're paying. For you can equip Umezawa's Jitte which will just win you the game that much faster and can still act as removal. Plus if you're playing blue you don't have to worry about True-Name Nemesis getting blocked anyways, so the exile trigger is essentially irrelevant.

The Swords, Sword of Fire and Ice, Sword of Light and Shadow, et al are so much better, as well as the previously mentioned Jitte and BSkull. I suppose in a FNM budget list, Godsend is ok.

Batterskull gives immediate value upon entry into the field from your Stoneforge Mystic and has no need to be equipped. Umezawa's Jitte is one less to equip and is ten million times better. Swords of X and Y are (namely Sword of Fire and Ice and Sword of Feast and Famine) all provide some kind of massive value for their equip cost and are also used for their protection value.

Godsend has about zero value.

Godsend requires blocking for it to create value, and has no effect on an empty board.
