Cheap but fairly consistent decks?

Legacy forum

Looking to get into Legacy, but I don't own any of the duals and few fetches. Outside of burn (that's my Modern deck, don't want to play it in this format too), what are cheap decks (under $1000) that are fairly consistent?

Death and Taxes is probably the best option. Mono white. Expensive cards are Stoneforge Mystic, Umezawa's Jitte, Batterskull, Wasteland, and Rishadan Port. I don't know too much about Legacy, so there may be cheaper decks, but this is the first thing that came to mind.

Well, there's Manaless Dredge. Not sure if you want to go down the route of degenerate combo though. There's this for a fairly comprehensive diagram of most of the Legacy decks. Anything with blue in it is probably automatically out of budget, but you could just look up some shit and see how you like it.

Manaless gets fucked after g1 though

I played manaless for a while and it sucked games 2 and 3. LED dredge is about $600-$700 and is much stronger after board than manaless. You could also play rainbow land TES for about the same price, maybe slightly more, which is fairly good. MUD is about 1 grand and is fun if you like that kind of deck. Nic Fit and Merfolk are about the same price. Merfolk is pretty good for getting staples. It runs 4 wastes and 4 forces which go into all flavors of delver.

I would recommend finding a deck you like to play, and slowly acquiring better pieces over time. To start with, you can use shocks instead of duals. It'll save $150 a pop, and will still allow you to play a reasonably solid deck. Fetches are kind of a must, but you could look for color combinations that will allow you to use Khans fetches (Esper for example) and this will also make it cheaper.

In my personal experience, when you're trying to get into a new format, you're best bet is to play a deck you really enjoy (even if it isn't fully upgraded) instead of playing something that's cheap, but doesn't fit your play style. Ultimately, if you play a deck you like, you'll be more likely to stick with the format, and be willing to slowly improve that deck over time.

Also, keep in mind Legacy is an investment. The vast majority of the cards you'll need to spend big money on will never decrease in value. I know from experience how hard it can be to get into the format, but once you're in, the value you've invested is very safe.

Good luck!

You can probably get D&T built for right around $1000, maybe a little over. If you look in the right places you can get Rishadan Ports for just under $100 each and Wastelands for around $60, making up right around $650 of your budget. The real issue will be getting your hands on Karakas, but you can easily grab a couple Italian ones for just under $100 a piece. Your four AEther Vials will make up about another $100 and then it's just a Stoneblade package, Moms, and the rest of the white weenies that D&T loves to play. You can easily cruise in right around $1000.

And you'll be competitive. Very competitive in fact.

bigguy99 that chart is hilarious.

"Who do you hate? Judges. Four Horsemen."

How expensive is Storm?

Keep in mind that you can get played stuff. I've seen LP Italian Karakas going for 80 on eBay.

ANT Storm is pretty expensive since you do need the blue duals and LED. It's the best version by far.

We shouldn't get into the argument here but I am of the firm belief that TES is a better deck than ANT is. LED is about $70 and rainbow lands are pretty cheap. Rainbow lands TES isn't great but it doesn't need 5 duals to be playable.

What's tes and ant stand for?

ANT is Ad Nauseam Tendrils. TES is The Epic Storm.

They are both UBr storm combo decks. ANT is slightly more stable and slightly slower. TES relies more heavily on red and plays 4 Burning Wish to be more explosive.

@bigguy99

She said fairly reliable.

May 17, 2015 6:46 p.m.

I don't even know what half those decks are lol

May 17, 2015 6:51 p.m.

Tibs are you a Johnny, Spike, Timmy, or another combination?

May 17, 2015 6:52 p.m.

Timmy/Spike

I play to win.

Mono 12 Post is relatively cheap and will set you back about a grand. Since you like big stuff...

You may wanna reconsider picking up the Legacy portions of RDW. They're not much different from what you have now, save Chain Lightning, Price of Progress, Fireblast, and Flame Rift. That will set you back about 90-100 or so.

May 17, 2015 7:12 p.m.

Why not this. 12 Post MUD. Comes in right around a grand and fucks over a lot of decks in the meta.

Reset high tide (no candelabras) isn't too expensive. The money cards are just force of will, flusterstorm and snapcaster

Or you could play regular High Tide (again, no candelabras) and not have to get Snappy. Both decks are pretty good and fun.

I run Legacy Affinity. Deck costs about $600. It's not very different from the Modern version asides from Artifact lands, Ancient Tomb and Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas.

The deck can perform turn 3/4 kills around 40% of the time, with turn 5 kills knocking up to about 60-70% from my runs with it.

It's not the best deck in the format, but it's fun to play, has lots of options in terms of content of the deck (from running Baleful Strix to Stoneforge Mystic or AEther Vial) and actually has a reasonable win percentage.

I've taken down Delver, Elves, Miracles, MUD and Infect to name a few with it. Fun and cheaper than the average Legacy deck!
