Looking for simple decks

The Kitchen Table forum

I have been playing magic for years, and so has my dad. The difference? He stopped playing in Urza's Sega, and while he has played with me since then, he doesn't like to think hard when he plays.

I ussually play my modern deck against him, and he always plays a burn deck we put togather. The problem is that my deck is soul sisters (with a black splash) and it crushes burn.

I thought about just shoveing maindeck Leyline of Punishments in, but that doesn't sound very fun to have the match outcome come down to just starting with a card in the opener.

I'm looking for a deck with an even matchup against soul sisters that doesn't include complicated cards. He doesn't want to have to read for 10 minutes to know what the card does (ie, nothing with a lot of text like planeswalkers, Deathrite Shaman, and Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip.)

Probably the most reading and thinking he will do is something like Order of the Ebon Hand. Please help me figure out a deck for him to use.

seems cool, i might try it!

I should have mentioned that i'm looking for more midrange/aggro list than combo though.

You should put phage, the untoughable in that deck!

Sounds like a green white weenie or token build would be good Elite Vanguard and Watchwolf seem like a good start. Or maybe mono black with a few demons some discard and few doom blades

How about Rakdos aggro with lots of False Cure effects and "can't gain life" effects like Skullcrack and Erebos, God of the Dead?

False Cure is a great idea. "The Cure" is a legacy aggro/combo deck similar to infect which wins by gaining life for the opponent. The pivotal cards are:

False Cure, Tainted Remedy - key effect
Kavu Predator - pivotal creature for the deck.
Skyshroud Cutter, Invigorate, Reverent Silence - free spells that gain/lose life for the opponent.

Anything else is optional. Some lists splash white for Swords to Plowshares, others play Dark Confidant to normilize draws and yet others splash blue for countermagic and Delver of Secrets  Flip.

Iv'e seen the false cure deck at my lgs, but I do want to avoid single cards that hose entire decks (read my deck). I like the GW midrange idea, and mono black sounds fun too. At this point i'm liking a build like this one https://deckstats.net/decks/104273/1068557-stompy. I should mention that I would proxy the deck and print it so price is not an issue.

[Gidgetimer] I don't like that for the same reason I don't like Leyline of Punishment, I don't want the gam's outcome to be based on drawing hate cards or not.

High density, low impact hate is a completely different beast than a leyline. If you don't want to be directly hated out, then that is fine. But "don't want it to be determined by a draw" is not an argument that pertains to the type of deck I was trying to suggest. With 14-18 low impact hosers, 22 lands, 16-20 threats, and 4 targeted/mass removal I think a Rakdos aggro/midrange deck could have consistent and close games with Soul Sisters.

Again, you do you. I am not trying to change your mind nor am I for some reason taking offense at you not liking my idea. I am just making you aware that hate can be low impact and consistent allowing for fun games with it being a factor.

What about mono W soldier stompy? Daru Warchief wants a home!

Additionally, I thought of a UB mill deck as a good aggressive deck. Glimpse the Unthinkable

I’m not sure I would do mill. You want something that interacts with life (otherwise the soul sister deck will not be fun to play).

I would recomend goblins - they are easy to pilot and fast, but soul sisters can still stabilise against them. There are lots of goblins available to build with, allowing you to make a deck with similar power to your own.

You can also do some fun, strange things in kitchen table, like Skirk Prospector into Worldfire, then an all out race for that last point of lethal damage.

I think midrange would be the best approach here because i'm worried that no matter how an aggro deck gets build it will still have problems closing out games. I tested a few decks and the Mono Green Stompy one seems to be the best aggro because it has at least some staying power, but i'm wondering what you guys think will make the matchup better for green, I was thinking more dismembers.

Sandstorm?

I don't think it is legal in Modern but if it is just the kitchen table, maybe you don't care?

From my testing, I don't attack a lot as it is, and adding more interaction to the green deck like gut shot diddn't work. The biggest problem was martyr of sands, but I will try sandstorm
