Christmas Gift

The Kitchen Table forum

Alright, so Christmas is coming quite soon, and I've been struggling as to what to get my brother for his gift. At first, I thought cards to improve his deck. While his current one is DECENT for kitchen table stuff (What he does), I had a thought. He has one deck, a deck he gets bored with as it's pretty much the same deck each game (Rakdos Aggro). So, I'm gonna buy him an entirely new deck. I'd be looking to spend around 50$ to 100$ on the deck, and i'd like to avoid watered down versions of bigger decks. Anyone have any ideas of what to make for him?

U/G squirrel token deck. A set of Intruder Alarm, Squirrel Nest, land/permanent untappers like Arbor Elf. Sprinkle in card draw Ponder, Preordain, or Brainstorm and counter magic to taste. Still gives you room for other stuff as well

If you guys play multiplayer alot you can also get him a burn deck. Repercussion, Wheel of Fate, Boros Reckoner, Blasphemous Act, a set of Sizzles, and sprikle burn to taste.

I suggest giving him something that's interesting to play. Something that requires more thinking. I find myself having an absolute blast every time I play a deck that has a unique wincon. I recently put together my Standard TurboFog and oh man I've never enjoyed Magic so much. You can do something like budget 8-rack which I believe MTGGoldfish has a $50 build for. Or maybe TurboFog Mill. Or maybe a Lands deck. Something that requires careful decision-making and is more than just playing and swinging with creatures to win. If you'd like links to I'd be more than happy to throw a bunch at you to help you find further inspiration.

We play pretty much exclusively multiplayer, although he already has a burn deck. Granted, it needs work, but I kinda wanna get him away from the aggro strategy, everything he has ever played has been aggro. and Lands might be possible, what is Lands exactly?

This is Lands. It's a super cool idea, and it's actually competitive. It maintains the aggro strategy so it's not too foreign, but it does it in a new and fresh way. There are a number of ways to win with this deck and all of them are incredibly satisfying. It just feels good to play this deck, especially when your key combos go off without a hitch.

For kitchen table you can build a fun Chromanticore deck for cheap:

Cost Reduction:
Hero of Iroas (Neccessary)
Herald of the Pantheon (Possibility)
Femeref Enchantress (Possibility)

Mana Ramp:
Birds of Paradise
Sylvan Caryatid (My favorite and the only one I ever ran)
Noble Hierarch (Upgrade)

Card Draw Engines:
Mesa Enchantress (Good)
Verduran Enchantress (Good)
Eidolon of Blossoms (Ok)
Argothian Enchantress (Expensive!!!! But the best one ever...)
Enchantress's Presence - Like Eidolon, but not not as vulnerable. The upside to Eidolon is it draws off itself.

Beat em up:
Chromanticore - Hells yeah!
Boon Satyr - Turns engines into beat sticks.

Card draw Auras:
Abundant Growth (Helps you get to 5 color and replaces itself)
Dragon Wings (Not my cup of tea, but cool)
Chosen by Heliod (Get em out of Lightning Bolt range)
Karametra's Favor (Amazing way to use your card draw engines!)
Spreading Seas (Mess up their mana or fix your own + draw)
Stratus Walk (Kyah!)

The only instant in the whole deck:
Hubris MUST HAVE

In addition to mainly beating people up with Hero of Iroas since you're playing kitchen table you can throw in an Auratog!

Lands seem pretty similar to what he already plays and doesn't look like it'll do multiplayer too well and I don't think Chroma would work out too well for him.

If he's getting bored because games play out similarly each game, why not build him a singleton type deck?

You could have Mystical Teachings, with a toolbox.

Tezzeret the Seeker with a toolbox.

Glittering Wish with a toolbox.

Or just jam a bunch of awesome cards together with no toolbox, good luck with your gift!

You could do UW Control geared for multiplayer. Throw in a set of Nevinyrral's Disk and some Planar Cleansings or maybe Day of Judgment, random removal/draw spells like Condemn/Swords to Plowshares, Blue Sun's Zenith/Divination/Think Twice or something, and finally, counters for whatever spells matter -- Dissolve comes to mind. The hard part is good win-cons, which might call for Elspeth, Sun's Champion.
