Some rather important information OP left out:

The Meathook Massacre is banned in Standard.

Yorion, Sky Nomad is banned in Modern.

It's not surprising that Yorion was banned. I think if you had asked most people what card Wizards was going to ban next, Yorion would be on the list.

I am a bit surprised to see Massacre to go, though. I know it's a very good card, but I had never really heard of any outsized effect it had on Standard. I honestly would have expected Liliana to go first (although if we're being honest Lili's dominance is probably at least part of the reason Meathook is gone in the first place).

Neither of these formats are ones I keep too close an eye on, Standard especially, but it'll be interesting to see how they evolve after these bans.

Happy Meathook was banned, not because it was a problem but because it's already $7 cheaper on tcgplayer.

It's almost like the companion mechanic should be it's own format kinda like planchase or something.... I super love the concept/idea at its core; but evidently it's just not suitable for legacy formats like modern.

RiotRunner789 my thoughts exactly haha after seeing the ban I immediately jumped on tcg to see how it has dropped I never pulled one but it wasn't a huge need to spend that kinda money on it I hope it keeps trending down some more 30-35 for the base version seems acceptable!

Yorion's a welcome ban in Modern for me, but honestly it wasn't expected. I thought if anything got the axe in Modern it would have been Wrenn and Six to blunt the power of the four-color pile decks. But I never liked Companions anyway, so I'd just as soon see them all banned if they won't take the Companion mechanic itself out of the game.

So that makes four out of the ten companions banned in at least one format, and Lurrus of the Dream-Den is banned almost out of existence. Is there another mechanic that has a similar density of banned cards? Even Dredge only has one card banned anywhere (but it's lost a lot of accessory cards like Dread Return and Bridge from Below in Modern).

Storm, maybe? Maybe? Quite a few of them are banned in Pauper, but I don't think many of them are banned in other eternal formats :/

Of the 21 cards with Storm, five of them are banned somewhere. Mind's Desire is Legacy banned/Vintage restricted, and Empty the Warrens, Grapeshot, Temporal Fissure, and Galvanic Relay are banned in Pauper.

Delve has three bans out of 27, but Dig Through Time and Treasure Cruise both have bans in multiple formats.

Of the ten black-bordered Moxen, only Mox Amber, Mox Diamond, and Mox Tantalite aren't banned anywhere. This group includes five of the Power Nine. Is "cheap artifact mana" a mechanic?

Meathook was solidly anti-aggro, and lets black decks shut down an entire archetype for free. It's also the older of the problem cards in mono-B control at the moment, so it will get the hit long before Lili or Sheoldred.
