What Versions of Cards Are the Best?

So, I know that having much more expensive or rare versions of cards, such as alt-art/promos, are typically the best.

However, I like to have as many different versions as I can, even if it's only the set symbol. I have a casual Standard lifegain deck, and I have Ajani's Pridemate from M11, M15, M19, and War of the Spark (however, I'd say that War of the Spark is my fav version).

What do you guys think about there being a "best version" of a card? What are the rules of thumb to determine it? Is it just value and rarity? Also, do any of you have any particular preferences like mine when it comes to card versions?

Value will typically go to the original printing unless it's a sought after card (or scarcer like judge printings), the price difference is usually negligible. As far as the best version, they literally do the same thing... pick your favorite art or whatever.

Being a commander player... I like foils and prefer the older card boarder (especially if it's avail. in foil.) if I have a choice.

If the card is: Promo, foil, original, or is a misprint, it typically has higher vaule.

For me, the number one thing that makes me pick a particular printing is the artwork, regardless of promo. Now that being said, the promo artworks are ususally really nice, however I will generally pick the the art I like most and then go from there.

Basic lands with rules text are the best basics.
