What counts as Orzhov?

I have a Orzhov Guild Kit and wanted to build a viable deck around the Orzhov Syndicate.

At first I looked at what other people built and discovered that a lot of them don't even use any of the guild specific mechanics and cards. They were basically just white/black decks.

For me an Orzhov deck would be either using one of the guilds key mechanics or using cards that are clearly related to the guild like Teysa Karlov or Vizkopa Guildmage.

But maybe I am wrong or I am missing something.

What would you consider to be a Orzhov themed deck?

Orzhov only describes a color identity of b/w. There are a few common themes in those colors, but the colors themselves aren't a theme, essentially.

Typically people refer to each of the Ravnica guild pairings when describing any 2 colour deck.

That doesn’t mean you can’t creatively restrict yourself to only using cards from the syndicate itself - though i’d personally suggest against doing something like that as it’s just needlessly weakening the end resulting deck.

I think that would be more Vorthos territory if you were to stick with the guild themes/mechanics and it keep a majority of the decklist in that theme/flavor.

Orzhov is a short-handed identifier for the color pair.

Orzhov-themed is a deck that uses that faction from the Ravnica sets, focusing on the Haunt, Extort, and Afterlife mechanics.

It"s not really wrong to refer to a deck based around the Church of Orzhova as Orzhov, but the name is also more broadly used as a general marker for white/black cards and decks, no matter what set they're from.

You could also call "Silverquill" if you were so inclined. But the community does usually call it all Orzhov. It was confusing to me when I was away from the game for so long, but I sort of get not wanting to call: , "White-Black" all the time. Or if you take it a step further, calling , Mardu instead of the cumbersome 3 color mouthful.
