To What Bots is Mark Rosewater Referring?

General forum

In this post, a user asked why the Orb of Insight has been retired, and Mark Rosewater explained that bots ruined it; to what "bots" is he referring? Were automated programs causing the web page to crash?

Automated programs were able to "solve" the Orbs and reveal all the information contained therein in a relatively short order. It ruined the fun of having players try to figure things out.

These type of bots were brought up when you asked about this in the past.

Caerwyn with the mega-callback from the shadowrealm.

Why have a subreddit when we have forums right here? If you are going to talk about and ask an unrelated question DeinoStinkus, make a new post about it.

Caerwyn, I do remember asking about this subject, before, but I did not remember the answers that I received, so I thank you for refreshing my memory.

Well, the bots couldn't have ruined it any worse than Mark Rosewater ruined Magic.

ClockworkSwordfish, that is rather harsh to say, is it not? I do not agree with every decision that Rosewater has made, but I would like to believe that he has been more beneficial than detrimental to this game in the time that he has been working on it.

If you think you can do better, ClockworkSwordfish, than someone who has spent more time working on creating magic than the average age of tappedout's userbase, you should prove yourself and do it.

As anyone who has worked on creating a custom set of their own can attest to, the level of knowledge Mark Rosewater holds for creating, developing and designing magic is immense. That's what over a decade of hands on experience will get you.

I would say that most failings of magic are not because of MaRo, but rather because of things restricting his and the rest of R&D's capability of giving us the product that we actually want, not what Hasbro and WotC higherups think we want. The work environment at WotC is known to be ... less than stellar, which hinders the capacity for well tuned innovation in game design and innovative team composition and cooperation (something we see in the play design team).

As the saying goes, Magic is the best designed game owned and managed by the worst company.
