Landfall burn sources?

General forum

I participated in a fnm a few years ago. First match was against a guy who had nothing but Japanese / chinese cards. He ended up returning all his lands and or permanants to his deck, playing a bunch of new ones, and somehow all the lands entering the field caused me to burn to death. Anyone know what cards could have caused this?

Hey, welcome to the site. The Q&A section is for rules questions, I'm sure a moderator will come move it in a bit.

Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle would do something like that, it is normally used with Scapeshift though, not something that returns lands to the deck. Akoum Hellkite could also do something like you are describing, but I'm not sure if it was ever in a popular deck.

Since it's not clear what format is being discussed, this has been moved to the "General" forum. For future reference, the "Rules Q&A" area of the site is meant to be for questions about game rules, tournament rules, and specific card interactions. If you're able to remember what cards were involved and have a question about how/whether what your opponent was doing actually worked, then that would be a good one for Rules Q&A.

If it was , I'm going to say Ob Nixilis, the Fallen + Warp World or something very similar. The idea here is to play out a bunch of permanents (often tokens), reshuffle them into your library with Warp World, and put that many permanents onto the battlefield. If you hit Ob Nixilis and a critical mass of lands this way, it can be a one-shot win.

Apologies for the double post, but Gidgetimer's suggestions of Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and Akoum Hellkite could also fit in the Nixilis Warp deck, but I personally haven't seen that.

I’m going to assume this was competitive modern, and the combo of Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle with Scapeshift.

If this doesn’t sound right, provide some more details on format, colours etc

It might be a variation on zombie hunt. It runs 3 copies of Treasure Hunt and 2 copies of Lightning Storm and 4 copies of Reliquary Tower with the rest of the deck being on color lands. The idea was to mulligan for treasure hunt and cast it on turn 3 so you could drop a Reliquary Tower setting you up for a turn 4 Lightning Storm to kill you opponent by discarding 20-30 lands.
