That Wizards puts out commander only cards from each standard legal set... I look at cards that aren't in the base set and think "why is this commander only?"

Thought came to me when they spoiled Cattie-brie of Mithral Hall. If I'm wrong I'll gladly be corrected lol

The Commander specific cards are not from the Standard set - they are from Commander preconstructed decks that happen to be released alongside the Standard set and follow the same theme as the Commander set, but are still their own unique entity.

It makes a lot of sense - it allows Wizards to create fun, new cards related to the certain planes and events that are not mechanically appropriate for Standard.

Meh, the rule for theaw cards should be "if the word commander is on the card its not legal" because cattie brie and eye tyrant need to bw 60 card legal... especoally the tyrant

I'm generally not as interested in Commander as other formats, and there are a lot of interesting, unique cards in those products that I want to use 2, 3, or even 4 of. Alas, Mitotic Manipulation + Spy Kit won't see the light of day outside of the casual tables...

magwaaf They are 60-card legal, if you are playing Legacy, Vintage, or generic non-formatted table top. Sure, they are not legal in Standard or Modern… but that always has been the case with supplemental products, well before they switched over to timing the supplemental product to be released alongside other product.

And I realize too late the Spy Kit was in a totally different supplement. The sentiment still stands, but the example is invalid.

Generally speaking, cards designed for eternal formats can get away with being a bit stronger. If they had to make these cards in a way they were legal for standard, three things would happen:

  1. They’d likely be much, much weaker, in general.

  2. Their design-space would most likely be much more confined, because they’d want to limit interactions to what’s covered in the set.

  3. You wouldn’t see any cards referencing things like the command zone, or “commander”, as these aren’t standard-legal terms.

By separating these cards as not being standard legal, they can taylor them for the format they are designed for, and so have more creative space to play in.

Well, point 3 is just not true. Arcane Signet is currently Standard Legal due to the Brawl decks that came with Throne of Eldraine. Considering that, it's a legit question why the supplemental multiplayer decks that are released with Standard aren't legal themselves.

Although Korvold, Fae-Cursed King has shown that these Commander-like cards are easy to overpower the Standard environment if they're too powerful. I don't think it's a mistake to make supplemental products legacy-legal only. If you want to build around them, play them in a Commander deck, that's their intended purpose.

Interesting - i didn’t know about Arcane Signet . Feels very strange having a card thats entirely pointless in standard, be legal there.
