Introduce Yourself!

We're supposed to be a community so I thought it would be a nice if we had a thread where people introduced themselves, so that we can all get to know each other a bit better (nothing contentious please!).

I'll start -

This is me (on the left!):

And this is what I do when I'm not playing Magic (clinical Psychology):

So come in, put your feet up and tell us more about yourself and what you do :)

This is either not allowed, or it's a great idea. I can't decide which one.

I don't have any online photo's of myself as they have been deemed hazardous to human health.

When I'm not playing magic, I'm trying to read sci-fi but can't due to thinking of magic.

I'm the same with Schuesseled, my photos are too sexy, they would break the internet ; p

But when I'm not playing magic I can be found playing video games (love FPS), and I'm also an avid Sci-Fi reader and writer. Currently working on a book, hopefully I'll have it published in the next year or two, and then I'll be getting around to publishing a fantasy story I'm working on also. You may be pleased to hear that Magic has inspired some of the fantasy work, along with A Song of Ice and Fire and The Elder Scrolls.

When I'm not playing Magic I'm a graduate student at the University of Hawaii studying mathematics. I also like to read web comics and Sci-fi books in my spare time.

I am dude, a video gamer (mostly RPGs) and computer technician; I make computers work for various clients across the United States. Email and stuff, nothing that would impress most people in the industry (except sometimes, the variety and quantity of work I do people find impressive). When not playing video games or Commander or making computers work, I study networks, so that I can be better at computer things. I also spend time maintaining myself and my abode. I also make an effort to socialize when possible (such as, posting here!).

I am mostly deaf, a poor communicator and irresponsible and poorly organized, but very punctual and thorough; no pictures of me exist to my knowledge except for some security footage that would violate NDAs to show. Mostly I play wobbly budget Commander decks.

Should cover everything important I think.

I'm a Junior in high school and plan to go into Physics for a general degree and most likely switch to a specialized field after the first year. I go to a Magic Club at my school after school every Wednesday. When I'm not doing homework or looking for a part-time job, I'm usually playing World of Warcraft, Starbound, League of Legends, or another game.

My favorite colors/combinations are, in order, Jund, RUG, Rakdos, and Simic. I started playing Magic not too long after RTR came out, and have been growing my collection since.

I love foreign everything, and am taking German IV at school. Last summer I went on a 3 week exchange program over in Germany in a cozy little town named Dingolfing about an hour away from Munich. I of course got cards when I was there, and managed to snag some rarer things for cheap compared to over here. However, I broke my wrist during the last week over there and was in a soft cast until I got back in the states.

I'm usually very secluded and prefer to work mostly alone. If you give me a task and a deadline, I'll work through it and usually get it done on time. I sometimes have trouble asking people for help on things, and usually end up waiting for someone to ask if I need help. Definitely something I need to work on.

I'm a junior at RPI, studying computer science, with an eye towards grad school and working in AI (hopefully). I play Magic/haunt this site more than I do anything else (an a lot more than I should), but I also enjoy sci-fi and fantasy writing, as well as videogames, board games, and pencil-and-paper RPGs.

The color combination that is most representative of me is Esper, but I'll play any color (although I tilt towards blue and away from red). I only started the game around Dark Ascension, so I'm still working towards getting a good collection going.

I also have Asperger's Syndrome and have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder. If I accidentally insulted you, please point it out to me, as I often say or type things without thinking how other people will react to them.

I'm a high school English teacher. I live nice and close to my lgs. I love deckbuilding, and have recently started dipping my toe into the modern tournaments there. My other commitments (spouse, choirs, non-gamer friends) mean that I almost never have an opportunity to go to FNM, I have the occasional Sunday or weekday afternoon free to play some MtG.

I've been playing since Revised, but I've been really getting into the game over the last 2 years.

I'm a 15 year old currently in year 10 (england) who enjoys any opportunity to test my wits against another which is why me playing Magic the Gathering was inevitable. In my spare time I play a lot of sports : Rugby, Boxing and Basketball. I am also an avid Football enthusiast (It is not Soccer, football, just football) who attends premier league games most weekends. I enjoy anything which puts me in a better state so that I can attend the university of my dreams- Cambridge, therefore I take part in many extra curricular activities such as writing for my local newspaper, entering poetry competitions and public speaking events. I also grasp any chance of getting out of my normal environment, not because I am unhappy but because I want to see the world and all the people in it. From my room I can only read books about the world and its many peoples, incomparable to seeing and living it. However my greatest interest is the Occult and Black Magic (I don't practice I just find it fascinating) and that is something I don't want to see or live :P

Thanks for the post ChiefBell, I have found reading about others extremely interesting and eye opening.

The picture's from a gig my band played at the Warhol Museum about a year ago, and I've fixed my hair since then ahaha. I just turned 16 today actually, and I'm a sophomore in high school. The only class that I like is English really. Band is cool too. I play Bass Clarinet, Double Bb Bass Clarinet, Bass Guitar (in my band), and a little bit of Upright Bass.

I play lots of video games of all genres. Most recently, I've just moved on from Killzone 4: Shadowfall to Assassin's creed 4: Black Flag. I play Fox in SSB.

Magic-wise, I always play either off-the-wall combo decks or unique theme decks. I always include White when I can. I'm an avid player of Angels, too. I attend local FNMs and my school Magic club. I usually place first, because nobody uses sideboards so crazy combos are 50x better haha.

I'm a high school senior with many interests but no extraordinary talent. I play trombone in my school's band, play Magic on Thursdays with my friends, and get too sexy for my shirt during cross country and track practices. I often read and interact here on Tappedout instead of doing homework. As sad as it is, this is 90% of my social life. Scholarship applications are the absolute bane of my life.

I have no pictures online other than Facebook, but I pretty much look how you expect a Magic player to look.

I noticed nobody's introduced themself by name (unless I just missed it), so I'll kick that off - I'm Shane, I'm 21, and I come form the land of milk and cheese. When I'm not playing Magic I'm playing other card games, video games, board games, drinking games, or waiting tables at a restaurant in a grocery store.

Don't be intimidated by how prestigious my job is, I'm usually pretty friendly. My favorite format is Modern and I want to see the format grow, so I try to go out of my way to help players who are just coming into it.

Incidentally, if anybody on this site also lives in Madison, Wisconsin let me know. I need to meet more players in my area.

raithe000 - I too have Asperger Syndrome. Do you find it easier to talk to people who also have it? I know I do; it's nice being able to say the shit you're thinking without worrying that you'll offend somebody. It's also nice that they understand my need to give every single detail I have on any given subject.

Oh yea. I'm Jay.

January 27, 2014 5:39 p.m.

Yeah, forgot to mention that as well... I love combo decks, infinite combos and all... But my favorite card/deck is Stuffy Doll ... Words cannot express what I feel for this card.

January 27, 2014 5:40 p.m.

raithe000 says... #22

Ian, and Slivers are my favorite creatures.

EvenDryke I honestly don't meet too many other people with Asperger's. While I'd like to think it would be easier, I find that I'm too uncomfortable when I first meet them for that to be true. It gets better once I know them, though.

I am shy about the internet so I am not up for giving out personal info.

I am a substitute teacher. I tell myself "it is temporary" as I finish up some certifications and incrementally improve my resume in various other ways and poke at a few jobs here and there. There is a master plan with like 6 different job threads / paths I could follow based on my experience and qualifications ... but ... I am really liking what I do and get called every single day (which slows down the process of finishing up classes and sending out resumes a bit). If it paid enough to build any kind of retirement, I would just keep being a sub. Screw the ratrace. I love doing it and I love ... the way it is ... in a way that would require probability to explain ... so I won't.

I was a grad student and it didn't work out - but I did get an M.S. in Statistics (but only published in Educational Psychology as a TA: Teacher Noticing stuff), did some very cool things, and have taken more to secret creative work instead of secret research.

hello all, I am a freshman in high school, and when I am not playing magic, I am playing the bassoon or watching anime. I moved about a year ago, and only 1 other person in my school plays magic, an he only started about 2 weeks ago, so my friends are the JCC (Japanese Culture Club, or as we are secretly called, anime club), which they have managed to make me interested in, and am still plotting a way to get them to play magic.

Like most before me, I also play instrument, that being percussion, with focus on marching battery. I mostly go for green or blue, never both. Werebear Wins

Hey all! My name is Will, I don't have a picture aside from facebook. I am a highschool senior and next year I will be majoring in environmental engineering. Magic is my favorite thing to do outside of school but I play Call of Duty at the competitive level as well. I play lacrosse and bike for sports but I don't particularly care for competitive sports (which is funny because i'm fine with it in COD and MTG). This is probably my most frequented site because I love this game. My favorite color is blue and faeries are my favorite creature type; I mostly play modern and EDH with some standard mixed in.

Nice to meet you all!

ChiefBell, scottemery, I'm also 15, living in England (Nottingham), and I'm also looking to go to Oxbridge. I love maths and physics (and MTG, obviously), and quantum physics fascinates me the most. I have a step uncle who works with lasers (I believe) at Oxford.

I don't really like football, but I do go swimming, sailing, and I occasionally do triathlon. People say that I'm posh, but the people that say that are mostly chavs tbh, and I don't view myself as posh, but I do try to be well spoken (probably why I get called posh). I just hate pointless slang (innit brav, ect.), and poor grammar, as it makes you less understood.

My contribution to the forum, have a good day :)

Played MTG in my teens but after marriage and a crappy first career led to some hard times I sold off all of my cards (revised, unlimited, beta) for WAY less than I should of and quit playing for a decade.

Just got back into the game again, trying to rebuild collection and get into some tournament play.

Other hobbies include Car Tuning/Racing, Tournament Archery, Golf, Home Theater, Anything Computer related, Gaming.

Hey guys, I recently started playing MTG literally a couple weeks ago so I'm a complete noob. Still learning a lot of stuff, but outside of that, I'm a college student, play league of legends a lot, and used to read/watch manga/anime but I only have time for 1 distraction nowadays and it's magic XD! I also play another gotta catch em all game called Pirates of the Cursed Seas (collect ship models you then use to play and stuff), but WizKids killed the game, so we don't play that as much if at all. I'm turning 22 this year (holy crap I feel old) and I'm majoring in biophysics (curriculum is totally spanking me), being an international student doesn't help (though I've been living in US > half my life).

I'm 44 y.o. and I live outside of Washington, DC. I work in IT during the day and coach fighters during the evening. I played Magic casually for years (never entered tourneys) but my playing group has dispersed across the cosmos. We stopped playing regularly during Mercadian Masques. I've missed it a lot!

The good news is that I recently found the Magic 2013 app for my iPad, which I'm enjoying immensely. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to allow me to construct my own casual decks using the cards I've collected over the years, so I joined this site hoping to test out some of my casual-play deck ideas.

Favorite card: Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord

nayaftw- I am in exactly the same scenario in terms of being labelled as posh purely based on the fact that I speak differently to my peers and that you could say I am better articulated. I can only laugh when they say I have a 'posh accent' for one day they will realise no one hoping to become successful in life says 'init', 'safe', 'sick' and 'blud. (well ussually anyway).

@scottemery: It's not okay to say "safe" anymore? How am I supposed to speak of security then?! :(

Dallie - Haha in your context that is obviously fine. But when you're every reply begins with 'safe' as it does in my school then in my opinion it isn't okay. Using 'safe' as an alterntive to 'cool' or 'okay' by the way. However, it is only my opinion and who am I to judge. :)

scottemery, yeah, most of the people in my school are exactly like that, then they're surprised when I get a decent grade in English, and they don't lol ;) I also agree with ChiefBell, social life in Britain is evidently forked (well, that's how I pronounce fucked at school so those hypocritical chavs don't start shouting "Ummmm, he just sweared!" like a 4 year old, and yeah, they do say 'sweared'. That's actually happened before lol), now with 10 year olds smoking and doing drugs, something's gone terribly wrong somewhere. Just about the only decent people left are nerds (us), one of the reasons that I play magic, to meet fellow nerds.

nayaftw, scottemery and ChiefBell, I know exactly what you guys mean. I'm well spoken and from a fairly well off area. I also play Magic and Pokemon and Skyrim and [insert nerdy game here], so people often blast me for being 'posh'. In particular, there is one person in my class who is the epitome of the failings of Britain. His behaviour closely resembles that of a howler monkey; he shouts all the time, he is really stupid and the sounds that come out of his mouth can't be understood by humans. It makes me sad that some people are so far behind in evolutionary terms.

Anyway, on to the topic at hand. I'm Matt, I'm 16 and I live in Bucks, in England. I enjoy nerdy games, but also love sport. My two sports are cycling and tennis, and I'm currently working towards becoming a tennis coach in order to pay my way through uni (hopefully). I go to FNM almost every Friday and I have been to every prerelease since I started playing just before Dark Ascension. I almost exclusively play Modern and I don't really have a favourite colour in Magic. I can't really think of much else right now, but there's probably more about me that I can't remember.
