So later this year I'm moving out of state and away from the playgroup Ive been playing edh with weekly for the past 5 years.
Im definitely going to need a way to continue playing once I move but I cant count on finding another edh playgroup. That being said, which of these "reliable" ways to play magic is best (in your opinion) and why?
Standard - easy to find people to play with, Im excited to play new cards, etc. Downside is the price to keep rotating decks.
Mtgo- easy to play but lacks the social interaction that I enjoy. The cheaper option but potentially leas fulfilling and I hear multiplayer edh games are hard to find.
Thoughts?

I agree, you can get a solid competitive modern deck for 15-40$ depending upon your requirements. I have a few good examples in my deck folder

Oh and edh actually has a pretty good following, commander leagues exist in almost all card shops that hold tournaments

If you enjoy EDH, keep playing it. As long as you're not moving somewhere with a game shop nearby, you will almost certainly be able to find an EDH playgroup there. I don't recommend standard or MTGO at all. Standard is taxing on the wallet and WOTC has been screwing it up quite a bit as of late. MTGO has a pretty poor reputation and just isn't the same as paper cards. Modern is expensive and can get stale, especially because WOTC likes screwing it up as well.

I would definitely search to see where the closest card shop is and introduce yourself. If you're moving out of the country or to the absolute middle of nowhere where there is no shop, MTGO may be your only option. In addition, I've found very few magic players that don't have at least 1 EDH deck in addition to their preferred FNM format. Most people bring their EDH decks to standard/modern events just to do something in case the event doesn't fire or they drop early, or at the very least they could be easily persuaded to do so.

I think that magic online is more of a viable option than you realize. I only started my account less than a year ago and I had been a commander player for many years already with paper cards. Starting a new collection online was kind of annoying but it was also kind of exciting because I was able to build Decks that I didn't have in paper. Finding multiplayer games online is extremely easy and you never have to wait very long to jump into a game. Playing multiplayer online is free once you assemble a deck to play with and I find that it's quite entertaining. Is it a substitute for a social group to actually sit with and be friends with of course not. But if you are feeling the magical itch and don't have a local game store to go to and try and meet new people then Magic Online is there for you 24 hours a day. My whole online collection is all focused only in blue and green to save money. I have about 20 decks to play online and I've only spent about $75 on cards so far since I made the account a year ago. Which if you think about it is comprable to having bought like a couple console video games. And my online collection would actually still be worth half that if I wanted to sell it back to the website I bought it from. Also maybe you can get some of your friends that used to play with to get magic online accounts also and you guys can play online. The guy i play Magic with my paper Decks the most ended up getting a magic online account after I did and we play online all the time also.

Playing limited in shops is also a great way to build a new playgroup. There's much more discussion about value, and deckbuilding vs. other formats.

So a couple things.
Local Game Stores are a PHENOMENAL way to play with people. A lot of cardstores have regular events (FNM, Monday Modern, Saturday Sealed, league, etc)
As for "reliable ways" to play magic, I would advise modern. True, it is more expensive to play, but owing to no rotations and it being a more stable format in terms of the standard bannings, it is a good format to get into. Depending on your budget, I would advise mono green stompy, goblins or burn if you don't have too much to spend, and whatever you find fun if your budget isn't as restrictive.
Best of luck!
