Well put together decks that use this card?

Deck Help forum

I was wondering if anyone has any examples of well preforming decks that use Hypersonic Dragon , I know this card isn't a powerhouse, but I'd like to use it for sentimental reasons.

Also link any cards you think might go well with Hypersonic Dragon (any format).

I think EDH would be your best bet, not gonna do much in most 60 card formats.

I think it could be cool with Melek, Izzet Paragon or Niv-Mizzet, Parun .

I got it in my Dragonstorm Galazeth Prismari deck.

Urza’s Pet Dragon

Btw as a tip, to link a card you need double brackets not just one.

Would Goldspan Dragon work better in the 60 card format?

Also nice commander deck... I've been working on similar for quite some time.

Yeah Goldspan Dragon is good in Standard I think. I’m currently putting together a Pioneer list with it. It’s Dragon Counter/Burn.

And thanks!

so . . . Glorybringer has been top tier in both modern and pioneer at one point.

Has it really?

On the topic of dragons with equivalent mana costs, thoughts on Thundermaw Hellkite and Stormbreath Dragon ?

It's a shame Hypersonic Dragon doesn't do as well as these other cards in a 60 card deck. Well, I can always use it in casual against crappy decks:)

I don’t really see them being played anymore. Maybe in EDH Dragon decks?

Stormbreath Dragon used to be played in Modern Ponza sideboards but idk if it does anymore.

Stormbreath Dragon was a 3/4-of in Modern Skred for a long time. It's still very very good in Path-heavy metas, and it's probably worth running one or two if UW(x) control is something you struggle with.

Thundermaw Hellkite might have seen play at one point, but honestly it's just the option you use against BW tokens, which isn't a super common deck anyways.

Both are easily outclassed by Glorybringer most of the time. It represents a 2-for-1 that can easily become a 3- or 4-for-1 if the opponent fails to remove it. While the other two are good, Glorybringer is better except against Path-Snapcaster decks and Bitterblossom / Lingering Souls decks, both of which are rare enough that it takes a really weird local meta for Thundermaw or Stormbreath to be the better choice.

They're all also ~$2 and fill a slot that you typically only have 4-6 spaces for.

TriusMalarky, you've convinced me. Glorybringer is definitely the best choice. Would you says it's a finisher in 60 card decks since the games usually end around turn 5?

Also interested to hear you guys rank all the dragons mentioned in this thread, best to worst in your opinion.

Glorybringer isn't exactly a finisher -- it's bad at actually dealing enough damage to kill. Typically, the plan is to have other heavy hitters that come down earlier, like Bonecrusher Giant , and then slam Bringer on t5 to 2-for-1 the opponent. Killing a walker, a solid creature, or a value engine creature on top of smacking for 4, as well as having your other creatures to swing in, will typically put the opponent in a really bad position. So while it itself doesn't really win the game, the situation you play it in is gamewinning.

As for rankings,

  • 1) Glorybringer, obviously. You know my thoughts.

  • 2) Stormbreath. The immunity to Path makes it somewhat playable in Modern.

  • 3) Thundermaw. Bigger than the top 2, so it hits harder, but his ability isn't all that relevant.

  • 4) Hypersonic. That late, what am I trying to cast at instant speed? t3f does this well because Supreme Verdict is playable on its own and comes down right after, but Hypersonic has no 6 mana sorcery that you actually want to be playing at instant speed to help it out. Now, the body + haste and flying is a solid rate so it's not really all that bad, but the other entries have interactive abilities tacked on while Hyper over here has the disadvantage of also being blue.

I made a list of all potential dragons to fit the "5 mana flying haste" criteria, and I'll just say that Tarox is the best out the ones not previously mentioned and he's just not worth it.

Oh, hey, I found Glorybringer but worse: Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker

May 24, 2021 3:52 p.m.

VinDiesel9999 says... #13

This might be sacrilegious, but I never cared much for planeswalkers, even though some are very powerful. So Sarkan definitely makes me roll my eyes.

Dragonmaster Outcast is better than Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker as well imo.

TriusMalarky I do dig your strategy and can't argue with your ranking. If I had to guess, I'd say that Hypersonic Dragon 's ability is really for decks that rely on the "overload" mechanic to play something like Mizzium Mortars at instant speed. It definitely is not designed to compliment a dragon themed deck despite the sweet card art.

Maybe in an "overload" focused deck Hypersonic could see some play, but you would need an arcane knowledge of sorceries which I lack.

Glorybringer also seems to be an upgrade of Mordant Dragon , though they have similar mechanics, you're paying one more red for a 5/5.

I think Goldspan Dragon may be slightly better than Glorybringer .

And I feel as though part of the trouble with dragons, is that they are overcosted most of the time just because people like dragons as concept.

Sorry to spam, but I think you left out Voracious Dragon in your list--I have found to be an excellent card when run in a Goblin deck with Krenko.

VinDiesel9999 says... #18

Oops, doesn't have haste

May 24, 2021 6:45 p.m.

TriusMalarky says... #19

I think Hypersonic was just "hey let's add Quicken to a creature" and they gave it a decent flying haste body because Quicken on a 5 cmc creature just wasn't all that good.

Goldspan is okay. I think Bringer is better because it doesn't need you to have relevant cards in hand to make use of its extra value, but Goldspan is fine. I think it's a lot better in Commander where every mana is valuable and Goldspan can start churning out mana pretty quickly. Or in Standard where you can afford to ramp into 7-8 mana spells.

I'd play Bringer over Goldspan in Pioneer or Modern, but if you have big things you want to ramp into in Pioneer it should do the trick.

Hardhitta7 says... #20

I like Goldspan Dragon more than Glorybringer in Pioneer because after he attacks he allows you to hold up Silumgar's Scorn . But this is just in Dragon decks and not decks that just have a dragon or two.

Here’s my Pioneer dragon deck I just put the finishing touches on if you wanna take a look.

I’m hoping so! Just starting to play Pioneer, currently building Prowess but that will be my next deck.

I love Galazeth Prismari . Lol

Dragon’s approach EDH deck. Gets your hypersonic. Pick whatever R/U(/x) commander you want. Run braid of fire. Have fun
