Obeka Ultimatum EDH Deck Idea

Deck Help forum

So I had this idea for an Obeka EDH deck that would make use of her ability to end other player's turns. But since it is a may ability, my idea is to give the player's ultimatums, so they have a hard time choosing whether to end their turn early or not. That said, I don't immediately have many cards in mind for this idea. Do you guys think this is a viable deck idea? If so, what would be some good cards to use?

Can you please explain what you mean by "giving the other players ultimatums"?

By that, I mean giving them hard choices between ending their turns early or continue their turn and suffer the negative effects being done by my cards.

Oh ok. Would it be viable? probably not. Would it be fun to play? yes. I don't know of any cards off the top of my head but I can imagine how fun it would be to watch my opponents shake their head as they are caught between a rock and a hard place. The biggest problem with the deck idea is that you are letting your opponent get out of a tough situation you put them in, because generally you want one or the other because its better for you, and then your opponent will pick the one that is best for them. Its a better idea just to use obeka shenagins on your turn and harm your opponents on theirs, because as I said you would just rather them get hurt by your cards then get out of it. You could also make it so if they ended their turn early you would get a bonus but if they didnt they would be harmed, but there is no reason to do that instead of just doing fun stuff on your turn that your opponent doesnt get a say in.

Archfiend of Depravity, Goblin Spymaster, Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, Archfiend of Despair, etc. This Scryfall search gets you a bunch of cards that have an end step trigger.

I will say the obvious, why would you give your opponents the ability to end their turn early and avoid a nasty effect? Are you looking to be hyper-political and make deals? That's the only reason I would see to run this kind of thing, but I can see why it'd be fun.

Those are all great cards! And I love scryfall, btw. So what if I activate Obeka on their pre-combat main phase with a bunch of these in play so that they can either end their turn early, don't attack, and avoid the end step effects, or they can just attack as normal and suffer the consequences?

AaronCreek If that's the idea, do it one step further: activate it after their upkeep step, so they don't draw a card. >:)

Oh, and you'll want untapper effects then: Pemmin's Aura, Thousand-Year Elixir, Freed from the Real

Hi AaronCreek! I myself have an Obeka deck and had the same idea you did while brewing it. However, I encountered some problems:

Since you are putting people in this position, you are using resources that ideally will end up being wasted, i.e. "I'll cast a cyclonic rift on your turn, so you are tempted to end the turn." The issue I ran into is that this basically means I was wasting my own resources to prevent my own resources from doing anything. It would be MUCH better for me to just LET the cyclonic rift resolve, etc.

Many of these effects, particularly ones that trigger "at end of turn" are not going to be helpful because they will draw aggro and also trigger AFTER your opponents have likely attacked or played out their turn.

I know that politicking is a really fun part of the game, but there comes a point of diminishing returns, where your opponents have built up enough resources that they no longer care to politick. When this happens, you'll have expended much of your resources PREVENTING them from being hurt by your cards.

I'm not knocking you for trying this archetype out! Rather, I'm warning you of my own difficulties with Obeka, which made me change how I built her deck.

This was also my initial idea for Obeka, but what gavriel1136 says is exactly correct.

I stuck with a few cards for the theme and did a few other things with my build (Obeka, Punchin' Out) to make it a more well-rounded deck.

Smokestack, Burning Sands, and Havoc Festival are the main ones. One really important thing to remember is that Obeka changes how people make decisions just by being on the field.

Those are some really good points. I'll have to try a few things to see what works for me. Thank you, guys!
