Darker Depths

Want to build an evil deck with Dark Depths + Vampire Hexmage (no Thespian's Stage).

  • I don't know what other 4 cards i can add to reach 60 cards;

  • I don't know if 12 tutors are good or bad;

  • My opponents will play Blood Moons, maybe cirle of protection and some kind of edict or exile effect;

  • I'm also afraid of some flyer 1/1 with protection (mother of runes can provide that);

  • Stern Dismissal is here to get rid of something i can't discard in time (probably using basics in some mathcup to beat a sneaked Blood Moon;

  • Probably my plan B is using discard + Reanimate and hope to hit something big enough to win if Depths is off.

What do you guys think?

If you’re unsure what 4 cards to add to get the deck to 60, Street Wraith can be a good option for letting you “effectively play a 56 card deck” by offering free cantrips.

I'm assuming budget is not a significant issue here, going off the array of tutors and fetchlands.

Feed the Swarm could be a reasonable sideboard card, or even mainboard if you know Blood Moon and Circles of Protection will be regular threats.

Contamination + a token generator like Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia or Ophiomancer is a good stall setup as you pull your combo together, and has potential as a counter-Blood Moon, but it eats up a lot of card slots. This can also help against Edicts, giving you more options to sacrifice.

Revenge of Ravens is a little mana-heavy, but will shut down any number of 1/X attackers. No Mercy is equally mana-heavy, but will shut down most attackers.

Spellskite can redirect targeted effects to itself, protecting your Marit Lage from those. There's not much mono-black can do against mass exile like Farewell or Settle the Wreckage, so those would be a good target for a late Thoughtseize.

Thud is an amusing option that dodges Circle of Protection: Black, removal, and flyers.

Give 'em a push

I'm curious why you don't want Thespian's Stage on this deck, because that card might be the final four cards you might be looking for. Is it because of moon effects? If that's the case I suggest switching to the stock BG Turbo Depths list. Green will give you additional tutor in Crop Rotation and also sideboard cards like Abrupt Decay to fight moon effects. Also related to moon effects, I suggest playing at least 1 basic land for each color in your deck.

Additional: Not of This World is a good consideration for protection when you are already online with Marit Lage.
