Deck Ideas for Multi-Player format

Deck Help forum

I'm looking for some fresh deck ideas that would be fun to play in a casual, multi-player (4 to 8 player) setting. Our playgroup tends to play creature or token decks. Occasionally, someone will break out a control, death/taxes, or infect deck. These tend to paint a target on that player. Burn decks are frowned up, as well as infinite combos.

I'd love to hear your ideas for a deck that can be fun and competitive in such a setting.

Steal their stuff and beat them with their own weapons with cards like Vedalken Shackles. You can find those kind of effect by searching the Scryfall site with "Gain control of" and "you control enchanted". If you're playing casual and have access to the full card pool, I'm sure there's a whole deck in there

This is my jam - I have DOZENS of decks like this on my profile at budget/ultrabudget levels. Some of my current favorites are:

Poke, poke, poke - Budget Casual

Crab Assault - Simic Budget Casual

The Fable of the Swan, the Fox, and the Stag

Enchantee, Mademoiselle! Budget Casual

Here's a folder with all of my casual builds

Seasons' Approach: How the seasons go by...

This is great for playgroups with a big power level discrepancy. You can easily keep the whole table alive until you finally win. It's somewhat hard to play and moves incredibly slow, but you won't be considered a threat until you win the game.

Other than that: COWABUNGA!!! Turtle power is a great toughness! or Shedding tears: Golgari Crocodile Tribal

Nobody sees these coming. Very fun decks for very cheap money.

My favorite commander for this type of case, and forgive me for saying this again (as some will recognize that I’ve posted this before), is Nekusar, the Mindrazer. This gives everyone extra cards to play with while putting the game on something of a clock. In my torture deck (it’s all Razor Pendulum, Thumbscrews, Skullcage, and whatnot) you’ve got a perpetual albeit slow drain on everyone, but it still lets them get cards and play. Pretty hard to beat that combination.

Blood Artist + board-wipe = maniacal laughter.

If everyone’s got wide boardstates, there’s a LOT you can do to profit from that, both defensively or aggressively. That seems like an interesting avenue to pursue for both new fresh ideas, but also to help grow/develop your local meta away from what appears to be quite a one-dimensional environment at the moment.

Tokens? Multiplayer? Creatures? Powerful? Sounds like Araumi of the Dead Tide. His power definitely scales depending on how you build it.

It'll take a lot of fuel for araumi in an 8 player game

Oros, the Avenger Wraths Matter.

It's a deck I had on here a while ago. You put deathtouch on him and he wipes the board. Add in actual Wraths for backups

Piru, the Volatile is a fun add. When she lands, don't pay her upkeep cost. When she dies, her Lifelink will grab you tons of life.

I should say now for those posting suggestions, that based on the OPs decks on the site, their format is 60 card casual multiplayer legacy/modern.

A lot of people here appear to be offering suggestions from an EDH/Commander perspective, which likely won’t be helpful for the OP.

In that case, with 6 - 8 players...

Rakdos Land Destruction ;)

This is a deck i’ve been playing with on mtgo with a surprisingly high success rate, and I imagine it would absolutely ruin lives in your multiplayer environment. It appears to be an innocent-enough creature-bases deck, but it absolutely preys on other creature-based decks, and can win games out of absolutely nowhere (even more so in a multiplayer environment, where a single Black Sun's Zenith is likely to just win on the spot).

Such a brew is (mostly) pretty cheap also, outside of the lands.

I appreciate the comments and deck ideas, both 60-card and EDH. I'm working to introduce them to EDH, so any and all ideas are good.

If we’re talking about 60 card decks, then extort would do awesome, as well as any card that just drains multiple opponents, such as Exsanguinate.

Lanzo493 My friend runs a casual multiplayer Orzhov extort deck that's hard to beat. Doesn't mess around with infinite combos, just slowly but surely drains the life out of everyone.
