Coulfner's Urn

I really want to build a 60-card deck around Coulfner's Urn for Traditional 1v1 play. Will you guys help with this? I was thinking of pairing it with zombies. But really anything would be cool.

I assume you’ll be trying to build a modern deck with this - as its not legal in most other 60-card formats.

What’s your budget for the deck??

Some immediate problems this card poses that will have to be built around include:

  • 3 mana is a LOT for a card that does nothing at-all on the turn it enters, and likely won’t provide any payoff until a few turns after its been in play… its very slow.

  • because this is so slow, the opponent has a lot of time to deal with it.

  • the creature having to have 4+ toughness to trigger this, and needing 3 such creatures, is a BIG hurdle to overcome. Good creatures with such a large toughness are hard to come by - especially as you’ll need them to be quite low mana to make the deck even remotely playable.

  • there has to be some kind of massive payoff for the creatures re-entering play, because you’re jumping through a lot of hoops just to get them to. They need to have really strong etb effects imo to be worth it.

I’m very skeptical this card can be made useful. I’m not even sure you’ll be able to get three 4+ toughness creatures exiled by this before the games over… and then even if you can, i’m not sure what 4+ toughness creatures are worth going to these lengths for.

Just as a note, you can link cards using double brackets, like so:

[[Colfenor's Urn]]

Colfenor's Urn

Personally, I would probably look at cards with Evoke. You can cast them for their evoke cost, get some value, and have them instantly die and trigger Colfenor's Urn. Then, when they return again, you not only get the creature, you get their enter the battlefield effect a second time.

wallisface is correct that it is probably too slow for Modern--though I think their assumption you are building for Modern assumes facts not in evidence. Based on your posting in the generic Deck Help forum, I am assuming you are building for "casual kitchen table shenanigans"--if not, then it would be helpful to say what format you are designing for.

Welcome to the club, shellsh0ckn0w!

As wallisface and Caerwyn have mentioned, knowing how much money you're willing to spend and if you're aiming for a certain format are important. I'm also going to ask if there are any colors you want to use or avoid.

Looking at creatures with Evoke, there are seven with a toughness 4 or greater, and just two have an Evoke cost under 4 mana. If you include Evoke cards with a toughness of 3, there are many more useful options, but you're going to need an additional Glorious Anthem, +1/+1 counters, or similar effects to bring their toughness up to 4.

Cheap, high toughness creatures like Wall of Omens and Aegis Turtle can provide a strong defense as you build to a different win condition, or you can turn their toughness into offense with cards like Assault Formation and High Alert.

Another potential angle is to build around Righteous Valkyrie, Bishop of Wings, and Kor Celebrant, using high-toughness Angels and Clerics to build an army.

The card is definitely slow, probably too slow for any tournament-level Constructed format, but a solid control shell will mitigate that, and it can be sped up a little with sacrifice effects. Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim, Severed Strands, Korozda Guildmage (which is a pet card of mine), and other effects that give resources based on a creature toughness can help, as well as more general sacrifice effects like Village Rites.

Above all, have fun!

That many paragraphs and I didn't mention Zombies...

Zombies tend to be relatively low toughness, although there are plenty of ways to raise that (Cemetery Reaper, Diregraf Captain, Lord of the Undead, etc.). They also tend to do a lot of work from the graveyard, rather than exile, so if you do decide to something with them, make sure the Urn doesn't interfere with the Zombies' own abilities.

To piggyback on some of what legendofa said: you might consider spells like Undying Malice that can keep creatures around while you’re getting situated but also put a +1/+1 on them, dropping your creature needs down to three toughness (to some extent). It gets pretty janky, but it’s an option!

The 4 toughness stipulation of Urn is quite restrictive to deck building unfortunately. But if you are running white you could replace it(or add redundancy) by using Promise of Tomorrow.

Some fun ways to get your creatures dead might be Lethal Vapors and/or Death Pit Offering.
