Custom Cards forum

I was browsing the Magic Set Editor forums and game accross this game that I think will work perfectly.

Introduction Show

Rules Show

So, I will start this with example:

Your group arrives at the outskirts of a small village. From the distance, the village seems serene at the backdrop of a lush sea of vibrant yellow wheat farms. You emerge from the damp forest and continue on the narrow path along the hills towards the village, when suddenly, a blood-curling scream is heard. You assume it is one of the villagers. You rush towards the village in hopes to help, before you can reach it, you spot a giant Wyvern emerging from among the buildings, clutching a person. It notices you and shrieks in your general direction.

Giant Wyvern
Creature - Wyvern (common)

Flying, menace When ~ enters the battlefield, exile target creature an opponent controls with power 1 or less.

All of the above is the challenge. Here is an example of what your answer to it might be:

You almost got the idea - you just need a custom card that represents your solution to the issue. For example, an instant named "cartwheel throw" or an enchantment named "Braux's aid" that describes how you rush towards the lady or an artefact named "giant cartwheel".

The basic formula is Descriptive Solution + card representing the solution.

Perfect! So, once more entries are chosen, I will choose a winner based on the story + card. That winner now has the job to create a new challenge while continuing the story based on who won. For example, if your story is continued, a new challenge could look something like this:

A new adventure! Show

AS we get more characters, I will add the roster to the main topic.

So what do I do here?

Sooo... am I presenting my solution to the same story that TypicalTimmy already solved, and then you choose among the solutions which one is the winner, and then that winner's story gets to be continued? So I am presenting my own solution as if Timmy's solution weren't proposed?

This is a cool idea. I was just thinking that the Card Creation Challenge thread is a kind of fan fiction for game development and mechanics. This thread can be both.

Here goes nothing! (almost literally... especially if I don't win)

An abducted woman, screaming in terror, is lifted and carried away by the drake. Archers race through the village to try to reach her--how did this drake get in unnoticed?--but none get there in time. Fortunately, I am already there.

Record scratch. Freeze frame. The camera zooms in on the woman being lifted up by the drake.

"Yup that's me. You're probably wondering how I got into this situation."

Meet Isavonna, the Conspirator Show

Screaming? Okay, yeah, I'm screaming for help. "Oh, help me!" I might have gone in over my head this time. But I've been in worse situations, and I know many a hot-blooded male will readily come to the rescue of a damsel in distress. Few will suspect a femme fatale.

Scream for Help

Instant

Search the top four cards of your library for a creature card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Put the rest onto the bottom of your library in a random order.

Forecast, Reveal Scream for Help from your hand: Look at the top card of your library. (Activate this ability only during your upkeep and only once each turn.)

This damsel in distress facade had better work. You boys had better come to my aid.

Isavonna eyes the minotaur with eyes narrowed in a piercing stare, her arms folded defiantly across her chest while the drake, carrying her, flies higher and higher.

edit: it's a wyvern, I must be drunk. Whatever, just kill it!

October 1, 2019 7:19 p.m.

so I am supposed to make up a story and then play it in one comment?

My thought was that it was all simultaneous and that the leader of this thread would retcon our stories and tell us at the end of the week what actually happened. Timmy... erm, I mean, Braux... you're the one who was summoned by the Scream for Help instant. Because yes, let's face it, we're shamelessly running a five-color deck for the duration of this campaign, haha.

Boza is this a correct interpretation of the rules? How does this vehicle actually drive?

My Character Show

Kie immedietly begins casting a spell, before cursing, failing to cast the spell in a mess of bubbles, pulling out a potion, and throwing it towards the wyvern. It splashes upon impact, hitting both the woman and the wyvern, and the changes start immediately. Both begin to grow feathers, and the woman's arms start to shift into wings, until two confused-looking doves fly away from the scene, into the forest. Kie grumbles something about "unreliable potions, should have stuck with the grounding spell" and begins to look for where the birds have flown off to.

Feathersplash

Instant

Until end of turn, up to two target creatures become 1/1 blue Bird creatures with hexproof. They lose all other abilities.

oK sorry about this Boza, but anyone who wants to have an actual campaign, but still keeping some rules from here, I'll set up a forum tomorrow.

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding the rules. With respect, I can understand why - the opening post is a confused, and can probably be cleaned up some. I believe you are trying to say something along the lines:

Rules

Each week, one player will be designated as the Dungeon Master (DM), and will pose an encounter for the group to solve. Encounters can be whatever the DM decides--epic combat, survival tests, dialogue checks, etc. Each encounter should also contain a custom-built Magic card representing an instrumental portion of the challenge.

Once posted, each non-DM players character (PC) shall post a solution to the challenge posed by the DM. The PCs have the following tools available to them:

  1. Their personal character (explained below);
  2. Any other PC's character (which will be listed on the homepage);
  3. Any other items, equipment, or allies the party has collected along their journey.

All decisions made for another player's character must be in-line with that character's identity, as defined by the character's creator. For example, if someone's character is a dumb barbarian, you could use them to solve problems through force; but probably could not solve problems via higher magics. It is also against the rules to kill off another player's character, unless you have their permission.

As part of your solution, you must create a custom Magic card representing an instrumental portion of the solution.

On [insert day of week], the DM shall determine which participant had the best solution to the encounter. The winning player's solution will become the canon solution for the party. The winning player shall then be the DM for the week, continuing the story and creating an encounter for the party to solve.

I think the above seems like a fairly clear, concise way of explaining what this is trying to do.

However, there is a big logistical issue with the ever-shifting DM plan and the myriad non-canon solutions that are going to clog up the thread.

Instead of a thread, perhaps this would work better as a completely empty prototype-marked deck. This way each DM can be added as one of the deck's creators, and can edit the deck's main body. The main body of the thread would contain the following information:

  1. The rules
  2. The canon story so far, kept behind a spoiler block.
  3. The encounter of the week, so it is nice and easy to read.
  4. Bios of each PC.
  5. Descriptions of other items and tools the players have in their arsenal.
  6. All the custom cards made thus far, not otherwise described in the character bios or inventory.

This also allows the posts to be archived every week, which will help keep things nice and simple.

Finally, I think for the first challenge, it should not be an encounter, but something special--each player has to make their character, card, and character's bio. Bios are to include a backstory, motivations/goals, colours/colour identity, personality traits, a brief description of powers, and, of course, a custom card.

That way everyone has some characters they can work with when they go into the first encounter.

Anyway, that's just my two cents. It's an interesting little contest, and could be quite fun--it just needs a bit of cleaning up and some changes for practicality's sake.

To make the character limit worthwhile, I think we really need to do what MTG R&D should have done a long time ago: institute "mill" as an official keyword. There is a 50 character difference between "put the top X cards of your library into your graveyard" and "mill X"...

Chancellor of the Spires has 341 characters, and could have saved so much space by instituting "mill" as a keyword...

Although, for a format like this, I'm doubting we'll be milling a whole lot... This kind of D&D/MTG hybrid campaign would probably be mostly combat and adventuring focused.

OK, I am sorry this is a bit confusing! Caerwyn's suggestion to make this a deck rather a thread will work a lot better given the limitations of the threads. It will work better to keep a clear and cohesive story and have a clear place for outside questions.

I will work on that - I will make a new thread with revised and cleared up rules, and make the deck page, making sure to tag several of the people that already commented and keep the thread open for any rules questions or concerns outside the game.

Regarding power creep - is it really that important? This is just for fun, and if someone wants to be Progenitus , who am I to stop them? Probably won't be fun to easily solve every challenge. But that would probably mean they won't be selected as the DM for the week, so there is a self-balancing there as well.

Can you make it so that everyone continues the story and not have a whole bunch of side adventures?
