Molgrath of the Soulflame

Legendary Creature - Minotaur Shaman

Deathtouch

Zombies you control have menace.

At the beginning of each of your main phases, you may sacrifice a nontoken creature. If you do, you may cast a Minotaur creature spell from your graveyard. It is a zombie in addition to it's other types.

3/5

Helps Minotaur tribal as they are, admittedly, glass cannons.

Updates:

  • Added nontoken clause as sacrificing a 1/1 goblin to bring back a Neheb, the Worthy is kind of cheap.
  • Added that Zombies get the tribal boon. This allows you to dip into a Zombie subtheme or outright Zombie tribe, but also strengthens the two as Zombies are perhaps the second strongest tribe in terms of raw +1/+1 and +2/+1 boons.
  • This means your dead cows get Menace but your living cows do not, which incentives brutal combat efforts as it is better for them to die
  • Sneak Attack becomes a must-have staple, also

Does the Minotaur need Flash since your casting it from the graveyard? Or no since your being allowed and instructed to?

I like the idea, but something feels of with it. Can't really put my finger on it.

Put onto battlefield could be better. I'm thinking of it by comparing it to victimize but that isn't repeatable so I'm not sure

Wendithewendigo, as the cost is a one-time deal at the beginning of the upkeep, I think it's better to cast them. If it were am activated tap ability, sure because then you are "casting" it by paying an activation cost.

For example, paying 3BB, T: to cast from the graveyard is no different from paying 1RR from the graveyard itself, in terms of having to spend mana.

By doing it this way, you get to use him twice per turn (once at the beginning of both upkeeps), which has the benefit of:

I agree that the Minotaur tribe... is rather lackluster and could use some assistance. As such, I don't think it's wrong that sacrificing any creature - including tokens - would be enough of a ticket to cast the Minotaur. Otherwise you're trading one nontoken for another nontoken and paying the cost for both. True Gravecrawler makes it a lot more tolerable, but I don't think it needs to be so complicated.

Take Haakon, Stromgald Scourge as a reference. He ain't much worth as a Commander that's true but you cast an Entomb or discard him from hand and you're good to play Knight tribal forever - or until someone exiles him or your graveyard, then you cry.

Haakon is just difficult to line up and his conditions and colors makes him less than ideal for the Commander post. However the Knight tribe is generally stronger and more established, whereas the Minotaurs needs some help and Molgrath you suggest costs 5 MV.

Alternatively you could include some additional benefit to reanimating, like reducing costs equal to the sacrificed creature's costs or have the entering or sacrificed creature deal damage to any target or something.

It doesn't feel that powerful nor exciting to cast a Felhide Brawler and then sacrifice it for the option to cast a Minotaur creature card from your graveyard that gains menace and zombie tribal benefits.

I mean look at Muldrotha, the Gravetide. I would say spice this one up! You have room to stuff in some more goodies.
