Merivul, Blood Drinker

Legendary Planeswalker - Merivul

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may reveal the top card of your library. If it is a Swamp, put it onto the battlefield and you lose 3 life. Otherwise put it in your graveyard.

+1 Create a 2/1 black Leech creature token with lifelink. If you revealed a Swamp with Merivul's triggered ability, create two Leech tokens instead.

-X Create X 2/1 black Leech creature tokens with lifelink. You lose X life.

-5 Sacrifice all Leeches you control. Target opponent loses life equal to the total power among Leeches you sacrificed in this way and you gain half that much life, rounded up.

Obvious Innistrad Planeswalker is obvious. Sort of a mixture of Sorin and Liliana of the Dark Realms.

I kind of feel like that with each new Planeswalker we get in MTG, they are progressively weaker and weaker. We went from literal Gods to beings such as Nahiri who could sculpt and craft entire networks across an infinite plane of reality and Liliana who could raise entire cities worth of the dead under her control, to beings like Teyo who can make a small barrier made of light, or Niko who basically makes shards of glass you can peer through, who also happens to be really good at throwing them.

Like, we went from beings who were demigods, to those who could crack an entire world in half at their will, to beings who had complete mastery over entire aspects of reality, to people who can make sparks or can rally the forces of some deadly assassin elves.

:/ Planeswalkers feel super weak, lately. So, as a sort of parody-jest at it, here's a lady who summons leeches. :|

And yeah, sure, Nahiri, Sorin, Liliana... these beings are thousands of years old and thus have had probably hundreds of years of perfecting their magic. But the point remains that the baseline power of Planeswalkers was considerably higher than it is today.

Look at Garruk and Lukka, Kiora and Hautli. They all command animal forces and do essentially the same thing.

Garruk could command the forces of basically any beast or animal he came across. Kiora is limited to only those of the sea. Hautli is then further limited to just dinosaurs. And Lukka? The Eludha isn't exactly special, nor unique, to him.

Just feels like we keep progressively going in the wrong direction, is all.

Outside of lore, I think the designers are trying to create more focused and "niche" planeswalkers. Chandra Nalaar and other early Chandras were basically Burn Deck, the Planeswalker. Jace Beleren and other early Jaces were Draw-Go, the Planeswalker. The umbrella archetypes got covered pretty quickly.

Since a) all the broad bases have already been covered and b) all planeswalkers are supposed to get a unique gimmick, the gimmicks have gotten progressively gimmick-ier. After a while, that system's going to produce a planeswalker that specifically supports control with a -1/-1 theme and cockatrice iconography, or mono- Elemental tribal based around combat quartz crystals, or something.
