Why only build O'Kagachi as Spirit Tribal?

Commander (EDH) forum

Hi Guys, I've been looking around and I only seem to see O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami built as Spirit tribal, more often than not mostly Kamigawa spirits and Arcane. While that's all well and good, Surely there are other ways to build the deck?

For Instance, O-Kagachi's effect is similar in concept to Isperia, Supreme Judge; that is, if you get attacked, something happens or can happen. This tells me that, if you were to build a deck based on what the commander wants to do, that you would either want that ability to be a deterrent, or something you want to trigger yourself. Surely there's a way to capitalise on that? At the very least, as per the name, I think this card wants to be aggressive and punish players for attacking you, and I'm sure there must be a way to take advantage of that, but I don't know what it is. Perhaps something where you can flash him in to surprise an opponent that just attacked you?

It wouldn't be too hard, it's just a matter of the die-hard Kamigawa fans out there that know O-Kagachi is probably the best they're going to get for their theme deck in the foreseeable future.

Once you decide to build a forced combat deck, King Kami has to compete with Gahiji, Honored One, Marisi, Breaker of the Coil, Thantis, the Warweaver, Basandra, Battle Seraph, Fumiko the Lowblood, and Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs. You'd have to have a real reason to be 5-color to not play one of those, instead.

In fact, it looks like no one is using him to punish people in combat. I didn't think about Jeskai builds, but Ruhan of the Fomori and Pramikon, Sky Rampart. The way I see it, red is an absolute necessity for Grand Melee effects, after that, combat needs directing with blue and white rattlesnake and Ghostly Prison effects, green combat math effects, and black death-trigger/mass reanimation effects.

You could use doublestrike (see Fireshrieker, Duelist's Heritage, and Atarka, World Render) for extra effect. This could lead you down a Voltron path, light Dragon Tribal maybe? Enchantress even... on that note you could potentially curse yourself so others attack you for benefits.

They also don't need to connect so things like AEtherize or Fog are good.

It's all colors. O-Kagachi is the only spirit in Magic other than Karador, Ghost Chieftain that's more than 2 colors. Shit, the only two-color ones are Brago, Geist of Traft, and Iname! Azorius is fine spirit colors but hey, who ever complained about more variety?

That's fair. Choices are Orzhov, Golgari, Azorius, Abzan, or Rainbow. Of those, Azorius, Abzan, and Rainbow are the most promising, and I would say Rainbow is way the best.

ZendikariWol: yeah i generally stick to rainbow decks when playing commander. more colors = more options, and i also never have to worry about mana issues since my group allows proxies.

I'm jealous, manbearpig90. I am but a sad, broke college boi trying to support an expensive, expensive hobby.

ZendikariWol most of the people i know also don't have literally thousands of dollars to spend on manabases, but we also just like seeing each others brews without our creativity being limited by our wallets. a nice proxy set of every fetchland, every original dual land, and every shock land already fills out 30 land slots in our rainbow builds. we just don't see the need for someone to essentially choose between a used car versus playing a Scion of the Ur-Dragon deck when there aren't even prizes available lol

manbearpig90, oh, you misunderstand. My friends and I just run tragic mana bases. We play our incredibly low-power-level decks against one another and... well, it's our own unique brand of fun.

It's our decision and we've talked it out. We know there are higher power levels to be explored, it's just not our cup of tea. We are casuals by choice. We know cEDH exists and recognize it, importantly, as a perfectly legitimate way to play the game. Just... not our way.

ZendikariWol i think you're the one who misunderstands, not me. i never said anything about deck power level. i never said my friends and i play CEDH. i'm simply saying we use proxies so we can brew without limitations. nothing more.

Oh, haha, forgot for a sec I wasn't on the Rule 0 forum. Either way, perfectly all right that you do proxies, we just roll with our horrific mana bases.

It is definitely because it is 5 colors which allows you to play the most powerful spells and spirit creatures possible. You wouldn't be able to fully optimize a spirit build in 2 colors if you were going HARD on the spirit theme.

UpperDeckerTaco That makes sense. If that's the best way to go, then that's the best way to go. It's just a shame that you can't adequately build around its ability. If they ever make a card for the Sisters of Flesh and Spirit, I hope there's more than one viable way to build them.
