It's a red Gray Merchant of Asphodel it doesn't give you the life gain but it is a mana less and it hits all players. Now I know black has reanimation effects that help Gary. But my red boy gets no live it seems. According to EDH rec Gary sees like 10 times more play. This is a travesty

Fanatic of Mogis

You should probably link the card(s) you wish to discuss.

Gary has tribal synergy, black has recursion / reanimation, and life loss is superior to damage because damage can be prevented or redirected whereas generally speaking life loss can not. Also, black generally has more permanents out with many pips. Red likes tokens and stack spells. While a boardstate will have red pips, almost always they'll be more black ones.

Gary simply has more going for it.

I tried tagging it in the title but I misspelled it. And it didn't spit out an error message.

I understand that Gary is better but is it really 10 times better?

Gary's extra 1 mana is a colored pip, making more devotion just by itself is a part of it.

Also, Gary gains you so much life, it stabilizes you if you've ben drawing aggro. I gained 64 life with a t6 Gary once. 4 opponents, 16 pips. Were that the Fanatic, I'd just have 4 angry opponents, afraid to die soon and willing to kill me. Now I had 4 opponents willing to kill me, but also >100 life.

Well worth the extra 1 mana.

Didn't mean to come off a bit stern. I was in the process of getting ready for work when I replied.

My apologies.

Yes, if there's one thing I hate more than anything in life, it's making money doing something I enjoy. Lol

Yes.

Even if it wasn't 10 times better, card inclusion isn't necessarily linearly related to card quality. I wouldn't say that Breeding Pool is 5 times better than Waterlogged Grove, but it is in 5 times as many decks.
