Which non-partner commanders would you totally use together?

If you could use any two commanders together, whether they had partner or not, which two would you use?

I'd use Karametra, God of Harvests and Maja, Bretagard Protector. Every time a creature enters the 'field, you get a land and a token. A token with +1+1. A 2/2 creature and a land with every creature ETB? Yes, please. But I'd like to hear your ideas.

Selvala, Heart of the Wilds + Birgi, God of Storytelling  Flip. Both are really strong storm-esque commanders, and I'd have a lot of fun generating an obscene amount of mana from them. That, or Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain + Birgi, God of Storytelling  Flip. I think Birgi already goes in Jhoira, but having easy access to her in the command zone just sounds too appealing.

Okay, kind of evil, and one isn't a commander, but what about Godo, Bandit Warlord and Puresteel Paladin? It'd be pretty broken and probably linear, but it'd be a top tier boros deck.

Trostani, Selesnya's Voice and either Esix, Fractal Bloom or Adrix and Nev, Twincasters would be really fun to run in a populate/token deck.

To elaborate on my Marchesa + Reyhan, I picture stuff like Verdurous Gearhulk allowing me to abuse any 3 etb/death triggers and itself on EVERY turn instead of once per round. Stuff like Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Kokusho, the Evening Star for life drain, Burglar Rat and Elvish Doomsayer for discard, Grim Haruspex for draw, and god knows what else I could come up with in sans white. That'd be a fun deck to brew...

Yarok, the Desecrated + Omnath, Locus of Creation to cut out the Horde of Notions middleman and get roundly punched in the face.

On a more responsible note, Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca or Adrix and Nev, Twincasters + Sygg, River Guide would give the Bant Merfolk commander I think is sorely missing.

I'd love to add Lier, Disciple of the Drowned to my Bruna, the Fading Light  Meld deck. Right now I use a lot of self mill to select reanimation targets, but white has very few ways to get instants and sorceries back from the grave, so they are dead cards when they get milled. Having Lier would open the deck up to two whole different card types, and it would be awesome.

But, if I'm being honest, I'd probably do Bruna, the Fading Light  Meld and Emrakul, the Promised End for first the flavor, and secondly because if I add no colors to my deck, then it's already done : )

There are a number of commander pairings that I'd love to see be possible for a number of reasons.

First on the list is Birgi, God of Storytelling  Flip and The Reality Chip. Doesn't strike me as overly powerful, but it could be fun to run 2/3 of a Sensei's Top combo in the command zone. My gut tells me it wouldn't be quite as capable as the archetype already is with Elsha, but it would be a nifty pairing none the less.

Second on my list would be Gavi, Nest Warden and Rielle, the Everwise. Another nifty pairing where they play off each other's strengths. The Gavi+Library of Leng+Decree of Silence soft lock gets even better when it also draws a card each time you slap down an opponent's spell on their turn, exactly what a control deck like this needs to be effective. Doesn't change the deck any, just puts Rielle into the command zone for convenient access.

Sisay, Weatherlight Captain and Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful would be just too cute a pairing. The theme would be strong with this one.

Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca could be fun with Sygg, River Guide, Jori En, Ruin Diver or Dalakos, Crafter of Wonders to cram even more cool merfolk into merfolk tribal.

Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip and Tinybones, Trinket Thief seem like a match made in heaven. Ditto for Emry, Lurker of the Loch and Urza, Lord High Artificer.

Mina and Denn, Wildborn and Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait would be THE definitive "lands matter" commanders, right up my alley.

All of these seem like fun, none of these mashups present a true problem for the format in terms of play pattern powerlevels, but not all my wish list pairings are things that would play nice with the rest of the format.

Najeela, the Blade-Blossom and Plargg, Dean of Chaos  Flip/Derevi, Empyrial Tactician, for example, would break the entire format.

Well, the only reason Moraug, Fury of Akoum can't go infinite is because there's no way to infinitely untap Walking Atlas in red, so adding Meloku the Clouded Mirror to the mix allows us to go infinite with Retreat to Coralhelm or Tideforce Elemental.

Sounds fun :)

There are absolutely ways to infinitely "untap" Walking Atlas in mono red. Off the top of my head, Birgi, Curio, 2 Kobold, Season Pyro, Lightning Greaves. Kobolds bounce each other for mana, end with one in hand. Cast Atlas, equip, drop a land, bounce a land, move greaves to Birgi. Cast the Pyro, discard some cards, make some tokens, bounce the Pyro and the Atlas. Rinse repeat for infinite combat phase triggers.

jaymc1130: Ok, this works, but it is a 7-card combo (not counting the commander). While it's definitely pretty awesome, it's incredibly hard to pull of. The bouncing part might be a good way to do it, though. I'll have to think about this. Thanks a lot for the creative input!

Yeah, not exactly what I'd call a consistently reliable combo, lol. But it can be done! Where there is a will, in MtG, there is usually a way. Sometimes ya just gotta dig deep if you really want to force something interesting.

With permission, or even without, I'm going to take a cue from Last_Laugh and give a little background on my Bant Merfolk thought. Merfolk have a decent tapping/untapping theme, with effects like Lullmage Mentor, Merrow Commerce, and Stonybrook Schoolmaster. Good for , but it leaves out cards like Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca, Glare of Subdual, and Seedborn Muse that would push it to the next level. There aren't really any Bant commanders or partners that support this strategy, and the only Bant Merfolk commander is Tuvasa the Sunlit. I've been wanting to build this for a while, but I've never been satisfied with the available options. It doesn't help that Thrasios, Triton Hero is pretty much universally recognized as a combo commander.

jaymc1130 How would you build Kumena and Jori En/Dalakos?

April 6, 2022 1:39 a.m.

jaymc1130 says... #20

legendofa Probably to be more tribal oriented and entertaining than competitive. It seems like the kind of deck I'd take to the LGS rather than use with my playgroup in our cutthroat competitive sessions. I really just like the idea of finding a loop where I counter my own spell with a Lullmage Mentor indefinitely while it's on the stack, make a bunch of Merfolk, and then sit back and play table police with my army of 1 million mermen.
