When a commander is not the commander

Commander (EDH) forum

Ok, been playing with Tergrid online. The deck is great at what it does but only once has it ever lived long enough to do it. The word is out, she gets focused down before you are even allowed to play. So I have to make a deck focused on her but she can not be the commander so they don't see what is coming. The goal is the same, make people miserable. To that end I have settleed ona Grixis or Jund commander but what commander exactly I can not be certain. So this is a question I am floating here and multiple other forums. What commander would work best with Tergrid in a stax/control build that is focused on her gettting onto the board quickly and ruining the game for everyone? Will I use it a lot, no.. but it will be used.

If you want to go Jund, I feel like Korvold, Fae-Cursed King propably is the best choice for it. Traximundar seems fitting for the Grixis build, but you could also try playing mono-B with Sidisi, Undead Vizier . And in case you'd like a Grave Pact in the command zone, how about savra golgari queen?

Korvold would probably be the best since he already loves to sacrifice and make others as well. You have decent protection spells in those colors. Imp's Mischief , Heroic Intervention , Deflecting Swat .

Esper however would give you better stax options and counter spells for protection. I'm thinking cards like Mana Vortex .

I think you should go Nath of the Gilt-Leaf with staxs just like Tinybones, Trinket Thief I think he is better in the 99 of Nath than he is as a commander. Getting the discard and creating tokens since you are getting only a 1/1 elf no one going to think munch initially until you start locking them out.

Leverage things like Trinisphere Tangle Wire Torpor Orb Opposition Agent Collector Ouphe and their are a ton of options.

Then you use more mana dorks and land ramp over artifact.

I mean there are lots of option depending on power level of the group and budget.

That is my suggestion as a commander to slide her into

Use Sidisi, Undead Vizier in the command zone to make sure you can easily find her

"The goal is the same, make people miserable."

Sounds super fun; I can't imagine why anyone would target you?!

If you are making this deck, trying to play it off as anything but that just makes you a miserable liar. If you make Tergrid, you are playing to farm as much salt as you can, caring nothing about their feelings, or fun. Before Tergrid there was Leovold. May as well maximize the pain now and maybe get the advisory board's attention sooner than prolong the misery until far later.

She's fine in the 99, as an effect that's powerful when you get it, but not present in every game you play. Just like Sen Triplets or Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger , you're asking to be dealt with, to be arch enemy, when you put Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip in the command zone.

I'm including her in my Rankle, Master of Pranks deck in the 99. The synergy is amazing when you combine them, and by itself, Rankle seems a lot more fair than Tergrid, looming from the command zone.

Grisbane

More miserable than what else watching chulane or kinnan play solitaire for 20 minutes.

I mean yes she can take stuff but hell I run a Yasova Dragonclaw built around stealing peoples creatures or any worse than a Shattergang Brothers deck. Really as much crap there is in commander she no more oppressive than other commanders people already play. We get this all the time from people trying to ban a card because the strategy is mean a lot of times it rarely wins the game.

ugg i love jund, but to be honest my best jund decks were not commander dependent
only half decent options are Korvold, Fae-Cursed King as already suggested , Lord Windgrace , & Xira Arien
personaly i love to run Darigaaz Reincarnated but he's just flavor and doesn't actually leave the zone
