What Commanders Are You Excited to Build?

Strixhaven/Commander 2021 are both fully spoiled, and I'm really excited. The generals I have an eye on are Osgir, the Reconstructor because we finally get an artifact sac outlet in the command zone and some sort of 5-color Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer deck starring Adrix and Nev, Twincasters because it's a cheaper, monetarily speaking, Parallel Lives , which is checks notes: 51 dollars? Jesus, someone reprint that. So, which ones are you planning on building? Let me know, and we can brew together!

If I had the time and money, all of them. But I don't have either, so none of them.

I'm gonna have to quote you on that.

Endless spoiler season burnout is extreme. I think trying to brew a boros Osgir deck for the competitive edge of edh would be pretty fun, though!

As for cards being expensive, you'll die waiting for reprints. Proxy away, the "game isn't for us" because we aren't collectors. Im serious, higher ups at WotC have said precisely that. So just turn on the proxy printer and brrrrrrrr

I actually really like Osgir, but he's in a weird spot. See, you need really good artifacts to make him powerful -- and I mean, cEDH rocks, LED, Moxen, etc. -- but he costs 4, which is slow, and he doesn't do anything until your next turn . . . which is a straight deal breaker in cEDH.

Where with artifacts you tend to want to go fast, Osgir comes along and says "yo, now you have two Thorn of Amethyst ", and he lets you draw so many cards and ramp so much. He's staxxy and rampy and grindy all at once, and only the Stax part was available in RW previously.

Esix, Fractal Bloom ! Omg this seems like it will be soo much fun. I cant wait to build it. But for real build it with actual cards lol and play it with my friends in real person to person life. And stomp them with it by playing there deck better than them

I’m super excited to build Galazeth Prismari . I always wanted to build Urza, Lord High Artificer but I don’t really want to play mono-blue.

Adding red gives you some sweet additions like Goldspan Dragon , Hellkite Tyrant , and Dockside Extortionist .

I have a list on my page if anyone wants to check it out.

Fain, the Broker (who I brewed a deck of already, in the feature queue), Ruxa, Patient Professor , Osgir, the Reconstructor , and Beledros Witherbloom are my go-to commanders from the pair of sets to build. Either they bring a new take to what I enjoy (Fain, Beledros) or just plain seem fun (Ruxa, Osgir).

April 12, 2021 11:47 a.m.

Dina, Soul Steeper is a really fun card! I've already made a deck around her (Steep Price to Pay (Dina, Soul Steeper)) that's gotten a lot of support and love, so that kinda makes me want to build the deck in paper.

April 12, 2021 12:22 p.m.

I'll build Gyome, Master Chef troll tribal. Even if it's just for the lols (you know, feeding the troll and stuff...). Beledros Witherbloom is pretty cool and I could imagine playing her. But that's about it. I am pretty happy about the reprint of Sapling of Colfenor , and I can't wait to add her to Thantis, the Warweaver The rest of the commanders from both the main set and the commander decks don't really speak to me.

I'm brewing around Quintorius, Field Historian (An old elephant learns new tricks) because I really like triggers like that - I already have a Tormod, the Desecrator list and I've never built a Boros deck before. But otherwise none of the legendaries really interest me very much.

I am very excited about the Mystical Vault cards or whatever. I love the art style and there's a lot of great cards I hope will be very affordable as a result for at least a brief period of time!

I don't know if he is a conductor or a collector but I am really looking forward to making some kind of shenanigans with Zaffai, Thunder Conductor or Zaffai, Thunder Collector.

Just building a deck with cards that would trigger his abilities will mean cards that don't normally see play in my decks and it seems it could lead to some surprise wins.

None the set is pretty meh a few cards will go into current decks

April 12, 2021 5:59 p.m.

I’m tempted by Ruxa, Patient Professor , but I’d rather make a vanilla deck with a vanilla Commander if I could manage it. Or a wubrg one that could have ALL my favorite vanillas. The only other thing that jumps out at me as an option would be more watermark decks, but I’m not nearly as interested in Harry Potter / Strixhaven as I was in the ravnica guilds. So, yeah. Not really feeling it.

I am also going to put something together built around Plargg, Deacon of Chaos. I just saw it today and I am going to do something unspeakable with it.

None of them have really popped out at me. But my decks will get plenty of new pieces and some decent reprints

Velomachus Lorehold is sweet! I've been waiting for a neat combat based spellslinger commander for awhile. Art is awesome too

I like a bunch of cards from Strixhaven, but Codie, Vociferous Codex looks really interesting. I have no idea how I'm going to build him though.

April 12, 2021 7:41 p.m.

MagicMarc says... #21

I would think Codie could only survive as a commander deck with some kind of extremely early combo win.

Or you make it a spellslinger deck but make a lot of the spells creature production ones with buyback and/or flashback. Sprinkle it with permanent and creature theft maybe?

Those sound like a good route to go with Codie. Maybe selfmill or wheel effects to get your yard filled up.

Hofri Ghostforge Everyone thinks all my decks are graveyard decks anyways...time to actually build one. I love doing strategies in colors people don't usually associate with those strategies, so Boros reanimator looks like just my thing.

April 13, 2021 10:28 a.m.

1empyrean says... #25

golgarigirl Same. I do reanimator in every color I can. Boros actually has some cool options to support this type of deck.

April 13, 2021 10:40 a.m.

Good call, golgarigirl. I think Hofri is the sleeper of the bunch, and is going to surprise a lot of people. White has so many great ETB triggers with fewer ways to activate them, same a red to some extent. Decks made with him will be, in my estimation, absolutely relentless.

April 13, 2021 10:43 a.m.

MagicMarc says... #27

I think it's a very powerful effect on Hofri Ghostforge . You never really lose your creature if you have some kind of reanimator ability or a way to get the card back in your library.

April 13, 2021 10:59 a.m.

Im pretty interested in Extus, being a Mardu midrange style of deck may he possible and be pretty viable in cEDH. Hofri looks reeeeeally fun and holy guacamole it will have a lot of niche cards in it to leverage its constant protoreanimate effect.. I think some of these commanders are kind of a home run because they don't unseat anything in the meta, they just add a new thing in midpower all the way through to fringe cEDH.

April 13, 2021 11:25 a.m.

MagicMarc says... #29

I like how, with some of the new cards like Extus, Oriq Overlord  Flip, they are not a dead draw because of legendary when you already have one in play.

In particular with Extus, Oriq Overlord  Flip it's even a really good synergy with its backside. Awaken the Blood Avatar lets you sacrifice creatures to reduce it's casting cost and Extus will put them back into your hand.

I'm interested in working with the deckbuilding restriction of Codie, Vociferous Codex to try to make that work.

Laelia, the Blade Reforged has me interested because I've always got an eye for playing aggressive decks.

Alibou, Ancient Witness makes me want to see how hard I can fireball my opponents with mana rocks and utility artifacts.

I also want to build with Gyome, Master Chef because it's just such a perfect marriage of flavor (pun very intended) and utility.

DiabolicalGuy says... #31

Gyome, Master Chef is definitely my favorite from this set. He's a really fun design! I'm leaning more towards building a Witherbloom Demon deck with Dina, Soul Steeper and Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire .

Other than that I'm feeling Crushing Disappointment towards the rest of Strixhaven... feels like a downgrade from what we got in Kaldheim.

I'm especially excited for Losheel, Clockwork Scholar , but I would say that the five deans also seem really cool as well (especially the red faces)! There's a lot of commanders in these two sets that seem unfairly underrated, and those are just a small sample of the cool options that are not being talked about enough!

April 27, 2021 11:48 a.m.

As I said before, I did it: Gyome, Master Chef troll tribal. If you're interested, here it is:
