What are your Favorite Commanders?

I've been in a bit of a rut lately. I only have one deck that I've kept together throughout the years (The Deck that Death Forgot [[PRIMER]]), and that's it. No other decks. I don't have a lot of money, and I don't have any friends who play magic, so I always chicken out of getting cards. Can someone recommend a fun commander that I can build around? I like ridiculous boardstates and I'm on a slight budget (I love proxies, so I buy like half of the cards in a deck and print the rest). Thanks!

If you want a ridiculous board state I recommend Selvala, Heart of the Wilds . She dumps your entire deck onto the battlefield with relative ease.

Finding tricks with Aminatou is always a favorite of mine. Gilded Drake , Wishclaw Talisman , etc. let you do busted things each turn for super cheap mana costs. Finding more and more every day is a pastime of mine!

I like using Feldon of the Third Path . He's one of the few decks I have that has survived through years of taking apart decks. His specialty is creating multiples of cards that should not exist in multiple in commander. Thing like 3 Utvara Hellkite or Pathrazer of Ulamog are devastating. My decklist is FELDON EDH PRIMER: FELDON NEEDS SOME LOVE. Boardstates can get ridiculous out of nowhere.

Muldrotha, the Gravetide is really powerful and fun to play.

I may have said this before, so apologies all around, but I really enjoy Nekusar, the Mindrazer because it gives everyone more cards while putting the overall game on a clock. The colors he provides access to could allow some of the shenanigans you are hoping for as well. Another option, though, is to focus on making decks that are fun without the commander. It can be very challenging, but also hilarious. Your mileage may vary, though...just keep the idea in your pocket.

My favorite decks to play are Ghave, Guru of Spores , Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer , and Queen Marchesa . Yeva, Nature's Herald is a fun one, too, if you like winning at instant speed. Let me know if you want to see any decklists. Actually they all should be on my page.

I will always have my Lavinia of the Tenth flicker deck. No one ever uses Detain anymore, plus it hits a shit ton of stuff.

Another two I’ll keep around are Marath, Will of the Wild and Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre . Though Ulamog can be a bit above budget depending on how few wastes you decide to run.

Ezuri, Claw of Progress has so many cheap value creatures, you can build an insane boardstate quickly. On the more expensive end, I play a Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder deck that's dragon tribal, but running him with a bunch of cascade/free cost spell and effects can turn a modest field into insanity rather rapidly. Doran, the Siege Tower lets you play a lot of defensive creatures that can easily turn around and wreck someone. A more general option is Surrak Dragonclaw who has the colors and support for dropping huge creatures and dealing damage.

Ayula, Queen Among Bears Best. Commander. Ever.

It is just such a blast to play with bears. Most of my usual playgroup plays some combination with blue and are always controlling each other out while I build silently my cuddly army and get in with a hexproof and indestructible River Bear XD

Also playing with Selvala, Explorer Returned in a grouphug deck, no win condition at all, just massive card draw, token generation and ramp effects for all players at the table, playing curses like Curse of Bounty on MYSELF and watch everyone at the table fall into total chaos either attacking me or trying to protect me because of all the boons I give out while I sit back with a drink, giggle and wait for them to kill each other.

latly i have been running Esior, Wardwing Familiar & Kodama of the East Tree
its a typical simic deck (mana loop, pick up the deck, drop walking)
but i've been surprised how well Esior, Wardwing Familiar functions especially in 1v1
consistent early access to a flyer that is hard to remove has made Esior, Wardwing Familiar on of my favorite commanders

Mairsil, the Pretender is my pet deck. I took it apart but I plan on reassembling it soon. It's just so fun, and it also got 2 really good cards in Strixhaven.

The point is it's incredibly complicated to play. Mairsil creates so many weird situations that you'll end up comboing off and then realizing halfway through that you could have won two turns ago. It's 100% the "Learn something new every game" type deck, and even with tutors grabbing the same few cards each game, your wins always happen differently. Actually, it's probably impossible to win the exact same way twice.

My first built-from-scratch deck was a Sedris, the Traitor King deck, and I kept it until finally retiring it earlier this year (I think I had it for about 9 years).

When Commander Legends came out, Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist caught my eye. Scouts for the Empyrean Squadron is the deck I ended up with.

Ardenn is absolutely worth building around. Maybe try partnering him with Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix or Silas Renn, Seeker Adept .

Alela, Artful Provocateur has been a favorite of mine. I went the direction of heavy enchantress and flying matters build. There are some good, budget cards that can fit into this kind of deck, since you mentioned that, which fit really well. Think things like Glorious Anthem , Gravitational Shift , and Favorable Winds . It's not been difficult for me to get a board full of large fliers that can easily beat down my opponents.

Another that I took in a more unusual direction is The Mimeoplasm built as a mill deck. People don't really tend to notice if you're milling libraries so you can cast your commander... and then you just keep it going. The green really only adds to being able to ramp up so you can get spells like Mind Grind to wipe out the table.

Thrun, the Last Troll is my favorite commander. I hate having my cool card removed, or countered, and so Thrun, the Last Troll is the current leader of my mono green voltron deck. That said, it has a bunch of other potential leaders if I want to change things up, that I shuffle into the deck if they are not leading, including Kogla, the Titan Ape and Silvos, Rogue Elemental

A more casual and budget but still a surprising powerhouse is Tromokratis voltron. You’ll be surprised how much it intimidates people into not attacking or even tapping anything. My deck is fully creatureless aside from Tromo because I run Proteus Staff and it lets me stack my deck. It’s filled with cards that tap people’s creatures and/or freeze them, bounce/combat protecting spells, shit ton of equipment that do crazy things. It’s my first go to deck for casual games.

Edric, Spymaster of Trest is the man! He is built with a ton of unblockable/flying 1 drops, which draw a ton of cards each turn, drawing more creatures, which draws more cards, etc...

Load it up with counterspells and a few extra turns/ Overrun cards and you've got yourself a super-budget card advantage engine that produces a strong snowballing effect on the battlefield. It's my pet deck and I think it'll be right up your alley!

New to tappedout - My two cents is Depala, Pilot Exemplar . Made a $50 budget deck around her and with all the love Boros is receiving in the latest sets it's been a blast to play.

Hey, welcome to TappedOut! Depala is a great commander, Magda, Brazen Outlaw really pushes the deck to the next level.
