The little Timmy wants to play blue

Commander (EDH) forum

After falling in love with EDH in the last year, I've come to the point where I own multiple decks, and among others, one mono-coloured deck for each colour except blue. In green, I have Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma. In white, it's Balan, Wandering Knight. In red, it's Torbran, Thane of Red Fell, and in black, it's Toshiro Umezawa. As you might notice, each of them except for perhaps Torbran, are rather unusual commanders, and I'm pretty happy with that (and I'm actually the least happy with Torbran, as well). For my personal harmony, I've tried multiple blue commanders to have one deck of each colour, but the decks I've tried don't feel right to the point that I didn't even want to try them. It's hard for me to play blue obviously. The two blue decks I've buult are Fblthp, the Lost and a Moana theme-deck around callaphe, beloved by the sea. Both feel too blue for me. Other decks I've considered are Kami of the Crescent Moon, Meloku the Clouded Mirror, Thryx, the Sudden Storm and Patron of the Moon. Are there other interesting blue commanders you can suggest? What do you think about my ideas? There are some constraints though:

  • The budget shouldn't be too high.

  • The commander should not be a "draw go" style one.

  • If it has a timmy feeling, I would be happy.

  • My other four decks are ramp, voltron, group slug and spellsplinger. These playstyles aren't no-goes, but I'd prefer not to double up if not for a good reason.

Let the disscussion begin.

I've seen some cool Emry, Lurker of the Loch builds even on a budget.

You dont see Muzzio, Visionary Architect much at all but he has a powerful effect on him. Could be fun.

If you want to stay fresh you could build a Thassa, Deep-Dwelling ETB LTB deck

griffstick: Muzzio's very interesting. I'm not the biggest fan of blink strategies as their turns tend to go forever. Emry is cool as well.

MagicalHacker: You have my attention, good sir. This is pretty awesome.

The most timmy feels in EDH in blue would be connected to the Sphinxes - large overcosted beasts of flight that generated card advantage.

Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign - for that sweet tribal.
Atemsis, All-Seeing - built-in alt win-con is more Johnny than Timmy, but it can be good.

Non-sphinx Timmy commanders:

Tromokratis, Lorthos, the Tidemaker, Stitcher Geralf, or if you just want to be mean -Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur.

Boza: From all these suggestions, I like Tromokratis and Atemsis, All-Seeing best. Thanks a lot.

I find Thada Adel, Acquisitor has allowed me to play big blue fairly well. It’s a blue-heavy format so the Islandwalk often finds a direction to point and stealing their mana rocks accelerates your game quickly. Then you can do whatever you want with all that mana.

February 24, 2020 1:04 p.m.

MindAblaze: That is interesting indeed. How would Thada finish a game?

How competitive are we talking here? I play with a 75% kitchen table group, and she holds her own. I steal people’s stuff, bounce their board state, stall their progress and then usually it’s just beat down with huge blue monsters and whatever I stole.

MindAblaze: I'm currently playing casual, and experience-wise, I'm definitely a noob in EDH, though I have plenty of experience in the game itself. I'm not into winning all the games, I just want to be able to participate in the action happening at the table. So the powerlevel you're describing is pretty much what I can imagine myself doing.

So after many different suggestions, here is what I can narrow it down to:

Braids, Conjurer Adept

Tromokratis

Thada Adel, Acquisitor

I can still somewhat imagine Meloku the Clouded Mirror, though I have no actual idea how I'd run him.

Any more ideas?

Here is my lengthy list of suggestions... get ready.

Braids, Conjurer Adept cheats creatures in for you, or could maybe somehow head up a grouphug deck??

Kami of the Crescent Moon could head up "draw tribal," perhaps alongside Toothy, Imaginary Friend?

Thassa, Deep-Dwelling could be a wacky blink commander.

Jalira, Master Polymorphist is super janky and fun- I know the spike option is to run one creature but the fun option is to run like a dozen and SPIN THE WHEEEEEEEEL.

Naban, Dean of Iteration, Naru Meha, Master Wizard, and Azami, Lady of Scrolls are all really neat Wizard commanders.

Sai, Master Thopterist, Emry, Lurker of the Loch, Arcum Dagsson, Padeem, Consul of Innovation, and Muzzio, Visionary Architect are all interesting artifact commanders.

Stitcher Geralf could surely be build around. Bonus points if the wincon is mill but zombie beats are all right too.

Talrand, Sky Summoner is one of my favorite cards. That is all.

A buddy has Syr Elenora, the Discerning hugging that surprisingly can pull out some wins. With some uncharacteristic Mono B commander damage thrown in

If you're looking for something unique, there's always Rayne, Academy Chancellor. Commander Cookout did an episode on her. I really like my Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest U/W aura deck. There's something liberating about playing enchantress and not starting out with only 80 slots, because green.

I’ve built an Unesh deck and could probably put up the list this weekend if you would like. It’s very much a play Sphinx and turn stuff sideways sort of deck with being pretty easy to pilot.

Sakashima the Impostor clone tribal is very fun. Scales to the table, and can appease a Timmy assuming another Timmy is present

February 24, 2020 11:26 p.m.

Vimozahr: Thanks, I'll have a look at it later.

ZendikariWol: Out of many awesome suggestions, I really like the "Janky Jalira". Kinda catchy. Combining "Mochi" with Toothy is cool as well. Thank you very much.

Gleeock: Elenora seems interesting. Can you tell me a little about your buddy's list?

triproberts12: I've listened to that episode. That's a powerful and unusual commander. I'm not too sure about enchantess here. I have a Siona, Captain of the Pyleas. Colourwise, it would be totally different though. Thanks.

Joe_Ken_: That sounds great. Right now, there's one thing keeping me from considering Unesh: A buddy of mine just build his Sphinx tribal and I basically gave him all my sphinxes. But I'd love to see your list.

fadelightningmm: I'm not the biggest fan of clone effects, but Sakashima is a fine card. The pricetag is a little too strong with this one, though. Thank you nonetheless for the input.

Note to myself: Add Jalira, Elenora and Rayn to consideration.

Gadwick, the Wizened and only spells that bounce things. It'll be hilariously frustrating to play against.

February 25, 2020 1:28 a.m.

Also, I'm actually really enjoying my mono-blue tempo list helmed by Callaphe, Beloved of the Sea.

February 25, 2020 1:29 a.m.

PhotogenicParasympathetic: Regarding Gadwick: That's exactly the kind of blue I just can't play ;) Do you have that Callaphe list uploaded here?

February 25, 2020 1:32 a.m.

I don't, but I'll try and put it up here in the next couple days. I'll tag you again when it's done!

Disclaimer: It's mostly built from things I already owned, and while it works well enough, there is definitely room for upgrades.

February 26, 2020 2:31 a.m.

PhotogenicParasympathetic: Thank you very much, that's a big help. Regarding your disclaimer: That's no problem. This way I can hopefully build something similar with what I have laying around.

To everyone who posted in this thread: Thank you a large lot!

I pondered the options back and forth, and came to a first conclusion after being able to trade for an Atemsis, All-Seeing. It might not have been the most suggested commander, but I like the puzzle feeling they have to them. For now, I'll try if I like the deck, but I definitely will come back to the great suggestions in this thread if I happen to dislike the deck.
