Strange Request

Commander (EDH) forum

So, I use to (and sometimes still do occasionally) play Yugioh, and I wanted to make a deck in EDH that kind of parallels/behaves like a meta Yugioh deck would.

As far as I can see, this would mean making a deck that quickly produces many big creatures with lots of protection (indestructible, hexproof, etc.), as well as lots and lots of counterspells.

Hopefully sounds doable, right?

So, my original idea was to make a deck with Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy as commander. Lots of big creatures that are hard to kill and counterspells, right?

Well, I was wondering if you all had better ideas. Sigarda, Host of Herons could work even better in some ways, but the whole counterspell piece of the puzzle kind of falls apart.

Maybe Yisan, the Wanderer Bard? Similar problem though.

The main issue is, how would I find a good commander that kind of bridges the gap between big creatures AND counterspells?

Look into Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy cEDH decks. Not my area of expertise so I can't give you much more than that, but if you're looking for that kind of hyper-fast experience, Kinnan's the commander and cEDH is the format.

You could run Zaxara, the Exemplary. Big giant x-cost hydras then either run a bunch of x-cost counters or counters in general.

Zaxara is actually really interesting. Good idea.

DeinoStinkus Definitely! Lmao.

Dragonlord Ojutai would fit perfectly and he definitely feels like the perfect yugioh card.

Reznorboy I would say Esper would be your go to. Yugioh is all about special summoning big dudes on turn one, right? Well then you definitely want a reanimator style list that can play big fatties like Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur and play a really sweet control package.

Okay so he’s not a fatty per se but he’s sweet lmao. Stuff like Sheoldred, Whispering One Rune-Scarred Demon Luminate Primordial and then the general suite of board wipes (you’re in black and white you’ve got them all), a fair set of Counterspell s, and the entire Reanimate package.

Assembling Kaldra (Helm of Kaldra, etc...) is kinda like Exodia? Not that it's quite as game ending, but I'm not sure what other giant monsters get assembled by named parts in Magic like that.

A Good Thing can give you a preposterously large life total like Yugioh too, haha!

I didn't know those cards existed. (Kaldra)

I think what I might try is Mutate to kind of pretend I'm doing Fusion Summons

Ok, I think what I'll do is this. Yisan, the Wanderer Bard, with Temur Sabertooth and creatures with Mutate.

I think it would be cool. Even if not, I can try something else.

Chromium sounds great -- some other Simic Legends would also be fun. Tatyova's cool.

You could also go Atraxa or a couple partners to get for high power ramp and the ability to run your own Blue-Eyes Chromium Dragon as well as awesome stompy doom machines.

I mean just play with all the cards that have either been banned at one point or are banned currently in other formats. That'll give you a real yugioh feel

RNR_Gaming My $30 Banned Mono Delver list says hello.

It is legal in literally nothing, except possibly Vintage but I havem't checked. Banned in Pauper(except one card is also uncommon, so also illegal), Legacy, Modern(except some cards aren't Modern legal). Great deck, the only way to make it better would be.... oh, wait, Power 9 and FoW is obvious.

Riku of Two Reflections works for counterspells and swarms of big creatures as well.

Or just lite yur cards on fire and throw em in the garbage, then you'd feel just like you were playing yugioh! ;)
