Sheldon Menery: The Passing of a Legend
After a seven-year fight with cancer, Sheldon Menery passed away last night.
Sheldon, for those unaware, was a founding member of EDH and a leading member of the Rules Committee. For years he shaped the game we know and love, becoming the very face of Commander. He oversaw the EDH banlist. He interfaced with Wizards on card design. He wrote numerous articles which drove conversations across the entire internet.
A polarising figure within the Magic community, he was not a man without flaws. He frequently made comments that the Rules Committee had to walk back or where he had to issue clarifications. Sometimes he spoke with derision toward entire segments of the game - particularly competitive players. His decisions on banning are, and remain, the subject of fierce debate and animosity.
But, no matter what you might think of him, think of his choices, think of his communication style, it cannot be denied that he had a profound impact upon the game itself. Even with his missteps, the game as a whole is better off for his contributions.
His long fight over, may he finally be able to rest in peace. And may his soul take heart in the knowledge that he helped create something which brings joy to millions around the globe.
Godspeed, you legendary creature.
Always thought a lot of the love for EDH stemmed from Sheldon, even with the controversy from it. If anything kept it from being turned into every other format that WotC has affected so differently, it was in my opinion, from that great man, despite my love for the cEDH community.
- Farewell, Sheldon.
