(RULE 0) Sarkhan as commander?

Commander (EDH) forum

I've been debating making a mono- deck lately and I became really fixated on the idea of having a Sarkhan planeswalker as a commander of a Rule 0 deck. So, my question is... in your opinion, do you think any of these would be "overpowered" or "broken" as a commander?

Sarkhan the Masterless

Sarkhan, Dragonsoul

Sarkhan, Fireblood

Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker

I don't think any of the would be broken or really all that strong. But I'd go with fire blood. Ramp in the command zone? In red? Sign me up

Masterless is your best bet for the control option. Once you get a few Dragons out, the static ability gives you wonderful protection.

Dragonsoul is a good finisher but one wrath clears your entire deck off the table.

Fireblood is amazing for speed if you're in a faster meta.

Personally, I think Dragonspeaker is all around crap.

So I'd say Masterless or Fireblood, depending if you need combat protection or speed.

My vote goes to Sarkhan, Fireblood

cEDH player here; none of them are broken.

I would say Dragonsoul is probably the strongest, in that it lets you pick off dorks or pretty much any creature, while Fireblood seems like it'd be the most "fun" of the bunch. But no, unless you're playing sub-PL 5, they should all be totally fine.

They all seem very mid. In mono red if you're not on Godo or some sort of storm shenanigans with birgi you're probably at a very fair playing level even if you're running the fast rocks because the pay offs just aren't that great/take a lot of set up. We're not your group though. It'll probably be best to ask who you play with to get an idea of what their expectations are.

why mono red though? if you want a sarkhan led dragon deck then the best option would be Sarkhan Unbroken

Because I like the simplicity of it. For a deck like this, which is really just a Vorthos kind of thing and not anything that's supposed to be overly powerful, adding more colors complicates my.. vision, I guess. You know what I mean?

Thanks for the input, everyone! If I do build this deck, it'll be led by Sarkhan, Fireblood or Sarkhan, Dragonsoul. I'd probably label them both as the commander and just switch between them when I feel like changing.

meh. spells are spells. you do whats written. so for me, 5c is just as simple as mono colored.

Can anyone tell me why Sarkhan, Dragonsoul is supposed to cost 25 bucks? Isn't he the PW-deck facewalker from M19? Why is he that expensive? It's not even that much of an error. I just at cardmarket (cheap market place for europe) and he starts at about 10€ there.

I think it had something to do with the print run being smaller or something. Not sure where I saw this but it sounds vaguely familiar. He's been that way for a while now, price-wise. It was one of the first decks I bought after getting into the game in early 2019, so I didn't pay that much for it. It holds a bit of nostalgia for me, hence the topic. lol

That kinda makes sense! Thanks for explaining.
