Random Combo Deck Build-Off

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on May 19, 2021, 12:49 p.m. by Hardhitta7

I just came across this website, Commander Spellbook. It lists 9,219 combos legal in EDH and has a “random combo” feature.

I was curious if anyone would be interested in a friendly build off where we hit the “random combo” button and build an edh deck based on the first one you get.

I anyone is interested we can come up with the rules and such if we need any. Just gauging interest.

No prizes or anything, just a fun challenge to practice your deck building prowess!

That sounds like a lot of fun honestly

I think it will be! I’m not very experienced building combo decks cause I play pretty casually so it would give me a bit of a challenge.

If anyone is interested what should the rules be? Should we set a budget?

May 19, 2021 2:48 p.m.

We should probably say no 5c commanders, that makes everything too easy. Budget might be good around 500 USD, maybe?

Yeah that all sounds good. I’m typing out all the rules and stuff, we will see if a few more people are interested and I’ll post a new thread where people can enter.

How long should it last? Idk how long it usually takes people to build a deck. I usually do it in one day if it’s an archetype I’m familiar with but hopefully this will get me out of my comfort zone.

How should we judge the winner? Make a new thread when time is up and have them post the deck there and people can upvote the comments?

I'd like to get in on this, but I would like to have at least four days of build time. Is that reasonable?

May 19, 2021 3:24 p.m.

Hardhitta7 says... #8

That’s reasonable for sure. You think that’s enough for everyone?

May 19, 2021 3:25 p.m.

legendofa says... #9

If anyone wants to go longer, I'm good with that. It's just a comfortable minimum for dedicated deck building around my usual schedule.

May 19, 2021 3:37 p.m.

I usually take somewhere in that range, 4 days seems good.

We should have the winner be whoever's deck gets the highest score on the competitive meter LMAO

May 19, 2021 3:37 p.m.

Hardhitta7 says... #11

Okay I’ll have build time end on 12:00pm on the 23rd. That’s 4 days not counting today. That’ll give people time to build on the weekend.

I think we should let people vote by upvoting comments with the decks they like. I don’t even know how the competitive meter works. Lol

Any other rules we should add?

When all the rules are decided I’ll post a new thread where people can enter.

Sounds interesting.

I think building should start on the 21st, to more people time to sign up. Or, let people sign up any time before end of building, and those people just have that much less time to build.

And I think the competitive meter is self-reported. If a card's in a lot of decks marked competitive, it ticks up the competitive side for your deck. Same thing for casual.

Hardhitta7 says... #15

Yeah I was planning to just let people enter until build time ends. They’ll just have less time to build.

Do you think I should wait to post the thread to enter or should I just post it tonight? If we wait we can change the end date.

I'm interested enough that I went ahead and clicked random combo to see what I'll be building.

I don't know if there's a lot to be gained by waiting, really. Post tonight. Maybe this is something we can do more than once.

Hardhitta7 says... #17

Okay I’ll post it. Sounds good, and yeah we can do it again later if people have fun.

Should I add a caveat where the cards from your combo don’t count towards your budget? Someone may get a super expensive card in their combo.

May 19, 2021 5:35 p.m.

Gidgetimer says... #19

If you are going to have a budget, you should also cap the price of the combo and have people reroll combos over a certain monetary value. In an extreme case as an example Power Artifact + Grim Monolith already surpasses the budget set above at $670 and would inspire very similar decks to Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth which costs $8.

I would be interested to do this as well, I just won't start building until the weekend at the earliest.

Hardhitta7 says... #20

I was thinking to add that the cards of your combo don’t count towards your budget.

And Gidgetimer how long do you need to build?

May 19, 2021 5:43 p.m. Edited.

1empyrean says... #21

I like the reroll idea more than exempting the combo from the total deck cost. If you get some expensive cards in your combo, then you are likely going to be able to use those cards outside of the combo and that just inherently effects the power level of a deck.

For example, if you get a combo with Phyrexian Altar , that's just huge for overall power level. It should absolutely effect the cost.

Gidgetimer says... #22

You putting it at Sunday is fine. I would probably do the entire thing on Saturday.

It is your challenge and you can run it as you like, but I'm not sure I am in favor of not counting the cards of the combo. Using the above example the expensive combo deck could include all four cards, but if you roll the cheaper one you couldn't include the two expensive cards putting the person with the cheaper combo at a disadvantage. I would be in favor of rerolling combos over $50 (or optionally rerolling) and the combo being included in the budget.

May 19, 2021 6:23 p.m.

Hardhitta7 says... #23

Okay we will do that. So your combo has to be $50 or less, if it’s more reroll.

Okay here’s the thread to enter: Enter the Random Combo Deck Build-Off

So, after rolling my random combo I immediately got an idea for the deck I am doing. Apparently I am not waiting for the weekend to do the build.
