Point-Based Deck Building?

Commander (EDH) forum

Good noon internet

I seem to remember seeing a way of building CMDR decks where you are allowed X amount of "points" to "spend" on cards for your deck, Rares being Y points, Uncommons being Z etc. Does anyone know what this is called? Are there any rubrics people apply to make this challenge actually difficult/possible?

Thanks!

(also, I have no idea if this is the right forum for this, feel free to bump it around Caerwyn)

Maybe I play too much D&D but I'd just call it "Point Buy."

Sounds a bit like canlander, but they use a point list instead of a reserved list

Canadian Highlander is the only popular format I know of with a point but system. Canlander’s points are ascribed to specific dangerous cards. Something extra powerful, like Ancestral Recall will burn 7 of your 10 points, leaving you little room for further broken cards. Here is the point list of you are curious.

I have heard of local groups applying point systems to regular EDH (or other formats), though it is not the norm. Often this is done as a way to limit power level and ensure a relatively even playing field.

Rarity is not the best metric for this system, since Wizards has often printed garbage rares, broken commons, and everything in between. However, rarity is easy and does not require you to develop a point buy list like Canlander has, so, in a casual setting, it can probably get the job done.

Everyone starts with 40 card decks made with only commons and an uncommon as the general.

Commons cost 1 point.

Uncommons cost 2 points.

Rares cost 3 points.

Mythics cost 4 points.

+1 point if it is a Legendary.

Sit down with your players to make a list of accomplishments in game.

Keep tally of each players points after each game.

Spend the points to upgrade your decks as you go.
