I love Blim but...

Commander (EDH) forum

Hello everyone, The Commander i am more excited about, among the new ones from Commander Legends, is probably Blim, Comedic Genius. I love its design and the idea to give others bad gifts. However my concern is that a deck like this may be very poorly received by the other players. I've already talked about the possibility of me building a deck around him to my playgroup and they weren't annoyed because it wouldn't be a OP deck that would lock games or win quickly. My fear is that they don't realize how annoying the deck could be.

However, i want to know your take on the situation.. Would you build a deck that may result being super annoying for others to play against?

Well since I am THE guy who plays stupid and annoying stuff (superfriends, Solitaire Jhoira, narset extra turns, vannifar eldrazi-pod and ruric thar staxish) I would say go for it. It seems like the deck would be unique and really fun to play. You have already talked to your playgroup and they said it would be ok for you to build it. Also Im of the oppinion that if ppl complain about what you play, they dont play enough interatcion (I do understand that ppl dont like to play agaisnt some types of decks due to how they operate ofc). I wish you luck and would Love to see the decklist when you have one!

If you play the deck every once and a while, its a change that can mix up the game and is bearable . If it's a deck you play often, then thats prob gonna get annoying.

I think the biggest problem that can come from weird decks (which, I too, am a purveyor of) is the horrible combination of (1) no win condition, and (2) the disabling of other’s actions. Early on, with the first iteration of my Natural Disasters! deck, I realized that I was constantly holding back on things like Flashfires and Jokulhaups. That deck never had (or has) a win condition, but it didn’t stop anyone from doing anything. Wiping out all the lands would do nothing but make everyone start over, so I took (almost) all of the massive land destruction out. If you’re passing around things like Havoc Festival, everyone can keep playing their decks...just on a shorter clock. Start throwing around Winter Orb and you’ll get some looks... ;p

I have a Zedruu the Greathearted deck that has a similar strategy. What I've found is in general, it depends on the gift; by focusing on effects that actively move you towards victory ( Crown of Doom ), instead of dragging the game out ( Static Orb ), you're much less likely to draw hate than the Omnath on the other side of the table.

Also, a lesson from personal experience: if you Aggressive Mining someone once, they will make it a mission to kill your commander on sight every single game afterwards.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, it's very much appreciated. To answer some of the fair points that came out: No, it won't be my main deck. I like to make budget decks (like around 50 bucks or so) that have a clear, defined stratey that won't require contant upgrading over time. This deck would be of them. About the strategy, i could built it without the cards like Demonic Pact/ Captive Audience that are super annoying because they very much kill you soon afterwards.

That being said there's people in my playgroup that thinks it's fun to play Obliterate while they pilot a Lord Windgrace deck so it's much more a personal moral choice rather than being 100% honest with others.

well, you can also play some stuff that doesn't necessarily harm the controller specifically so much as provides a parallel effect, i.e. Grip of Chaos, ... or the tons of other more universal cards that don't feel like dredging up. If you play a good smattering of plain old parallel effects where ownership doesn't matter & the controller isn't any more affected than anyone else, than I don't think it would be much more salty than any other deck. That being said, I would still play Havoc Festival, Thieves' Auction

He's definitely one of those commanders that gives you all sorts of nasty ideas but at the end of the day he's a rakdos Zedru and you have to go through a lot of hoops to give someone a nasty gift. Personally, I'd respect any brewer/piolet who could jump those hoops and make it work.
