Ghired being disrespected?

Commander (EDH) forum

One of the 2019 Commanders is Ghired, Conclave Exile . I have heard a lot of chatter and good things from the other three commanders, but everyone seems to be sleeping on ma boi Ghired.

I know he's not cEDH material, but dayum, have we as mtg players become so hard to please? I feel like Ghired has a RIDICULOUSLY high ceiling compared to the others ( Helm of the Host ? ) Why do you think he's copping a lot of hate?

Seems to me they are all getting hated on.

Ghired is neat, but he isn't all that strong. Populate is a bit of a slow mechanic in edh imo

He looks like a ton of fun with Godsire , ETB effects off of Mimic Vat , an Eternalized Adorned Pouncer , and all the things that really shouldn't be tokens with God-Pharaoh's Gift .

DaWubber has the right idea. Don't forget Grove of the Guardian , Feldon of the Third Path and Awaken the Sky Tyrant .

the issue is he's 2/3rds boros which is considered the weakest two colors, there isn't a lot of variation in card advantage.

TypicalTimmy the morph commander doesn't just trigger off of the morph mechanic, it also triggers off of manifest (sadly Ugin, the Ineffable won't trigger it, still making the casting cost of morph cost 1 is sweet).

now being a fair Helm of the Host commander that's in the colors of all the stuff that really abuses it is nice.

Blade of Selves Bogardan Hellkite s. I'm sure my brain can think of something more broken to do with it, but this is funny.

Blade of Selves Terastodon , then populate the terastodon. Attacking. LOL Same way, Ulvenwald Hydra for value ramp or any non legendary eldrazi, like Pathrazer of Ulamog . Then there is the Timmyest of all: Armada Wurm . Attack with blade, create a bunch of tokens, then more tokens, then populate another one for more tokens. Now that you read this, think what happens with a Parallel Lives on the field.

I think a deck like this needs all 4 of these in it

These would make it really easy to keep attacking with your cmdr and keep the pressure on

And with the 3 of the 4 I mentioned you can use red damage based board wipes, like Starstorm and Faultline and others to wipe the board and keep yours.

I love token decks and I have a very well tuned green white token deck. And i always wanted to splash red in them for the punishment a board wipe would do to the opponents with cards like Vicious Shadows and Stalking Vengeance

It would also be really neat to have Purphoros, God of the Forge or Warstorm Surge and/or other effect like that in play, then put a ton of tokens out with something like Secure the Wastes or Finale of Glory

Removal does not make a deck a spike deck. That takes the optimal efficient removal and efficient win cons. Even command zone suggests having removal and they are for sure a casual channel. Also, fun is subjective. For some it is dropping big bois, for others it is a fast interactive game, for others it is memeing your way through a game with a chair tribal deck.

Thinking about it more critically over the last couple of days, many players are probably wondering what Ghired, Conclave Exile offers that Trostani, Selesnya's Voice doesn't already do, arguably with also a better secondary effect.

I think Ghired is trading out Tostani's set up cost for instant payout in the form of the Rhino token, contrasting it's addition of red to a deck for explosive aggression to Tostani's ability to stick around late game with the lifegain.

I feel it's another case of unnecessary balance conservatism in a casual format. Ghired could have done well to be cheaper by one or two mana and/or have haste. It still wouldn't be cEDH material but at least less clunky.

I will definitely be building a Bebop and Rocksteady deck.

The morph deck was revealed and has secondary theme of sneakyness (stealing/copying things) and as the spoilers come down for the flashback deck its clear that it is also a pillowfort deck... I really hope that Bebop and Rocksteady's deck has a cool secondary theme like death triggers (see above for things like Stalking Vengeance and Vicious Shadows )

Naya aristocrats would be a neat twist.

While I don’t think Ghired is cEDH by any stretch, I think he can be powerful. He is my take on it, seems to be playtesting pretty well, but am playing it for real tomorrow against four other decks. Any thoughts on it would be appreciated. If it doesn’t run well, might cannibalize it and make a Mayael deck.
