Favorite color or color combination?

Commander (EDH) forum

So I apparently have an addiction to lol. I've got Anje Falkenrath and I'm building Kalain, Reclusive Painter . I've even got most of the off shoots of Rakdos with Ghen, Arcanum Weaver as my and Mairsil, the Pretender as my commanders. I've been thinking of what to build for and also thinking about other commanders like Lyzolda, the Blood Witch .

Are there any colors you like playing more than others? Or find merely by coincidence shows up in more of your decks than others?

As much as I make fun of the color, I have yet to build a deck without white. It's become a joke within my playgroup, as I bring out a deck (say Atla Palani, Nest Tender ) they'll say "I thought you hated white?" lol.

for me. Mainly because of my preferred playstyle of Aristocrats and my tendency towards token decks, with White or Black being in any of my Aristocrats decks in some form or another, and White basically being the main color of tokens. I do brew a lot of decks on here with to. Only one deck of mine irl has Red, but I keep finding commanders with Red I think I'd enjoy.

, usually with tagging along. The first EDH decks I built myself were and , and I keep finding different ways to use these colors.

I have a tendency to use white in my decks for it's reanimator options. Emeria Shepherd is absolutely of of my favorite cards.

Mono for sure. Ramp, tutors and removal. We are weak against artifacts and enchantments but thats a small price to pay for having unrestricted tutors and ramp. Colorless cards (albeit high CMC and sometimes $) can help mitigate this weakness. Feels amazing to have Torment of Hailfire for X = 30+, with a backup for Imp's Mischief to stop a counterspell just in case. The look on some people's faces the first time is priceless.

is my favorite. Everything else is secondary to that. As long as I can ramp, I don't care about my second or third color. Just mana dorks and pay-offs for me.

Imp's Mischief is good but you should see the faces and the reactions you'll get with Withering Boon . I once countered Progenitus with Withering Boon and the whole lgs was standing and looking over to see what the commotion was. Also don't underestimate the power of Withering Boon . If you are playing mono black this is better than most removal spells as it can stop very important etb effects or reaction effects or spells.

Usually for me, or some GBx color combo. Tends to have solid removal, solid ramp, solid card advantage, and a good amount of diversity among commanders/strategies, especially when branching out into GBx

I would argue Sultai is the king of Tri-color for EDH. Ramp in green, removal and tutors in black, draw and counters in blue. All the best colors of MTG rolled into 1. I love Green/Black as well. Meren in particular tickles my fancy.

July 30, 2021 9:47 p.m.

Lanzo493: Do you love to ramp? Does it make you dance when you got twenty lands on the table?

Very much green, but it goes up to most tri-colours from there. But mono and mono often carch me.

I'll be honest, I'm a dirty black player. Haha. For the most part though, i enjoy splash. Really any of them, but Sultai and Grixis are my favorites.

My favorite colours in the game are white and blue. That is driven in large part by a concept of good over evil. I also enjoy black, and white/black is a favorite colour combo.

My least favorite colour is green. I have just never been able to bond with many of the themes of the colour - elves, worms, squirrels, etc, just are not my thing.

July 31, 2021 2:47 a.m.

When I started playing my two first decks were and . I loved black, no question. But somehow has moved into my favourite colour without me even knowing. I already own a mono blue deck and I want to build two more with Higure, the Still Wind and Blind Seer . I guess I have an addiction to blue now even though I hate playing counter spells as removal.

Boros lol. It’s kind of a problem

I've got so much love for boros. I swear that I want to build so many different boros decks. But also wizards of the coast is doing really well with creating interesting deck building strategies that don't dive deep into attack strategies. Strixhaven and Lorehold was perfect for these things. Boros has also been getting some good card draw/recursion cards.

I'm gonna go a bit deeper into my favorite colors and my color identity.

I've built a mono colored deck for every color.

  • I've built about 10 different decks. Black is my favorite mono color
  • I've built about 3 mono green decks. My second favorite mono color.
  • I've built 5 different mono red decks. Goblins, and dragons. Neheb, red akroma, and grenzo. Red is my 3rd fav mono color
  • I've built angels like 4 different ways. I love mono white for uts lifegain. White ties at 3rd place for me.
  • I've built one mono blue deck. I remember casting a Portent and taking forever to read the card then forever to resolve the card and then thinking and saying outloud that mono blue is definitely not my color. The only mono blue deck I liked that I built out if the 2 I built was Sphinx tribal.
  • never built a colorless deck. It's not my thing yet.

I feel my personality is boros but my deck are more like mixed with . My favorite part of the game is combat. And I like to swing with reckless abandon. I also love to use board wipes to my advantage. I think that's why I love mardu, witch brings me to 3 colors. I love having things all over th board. So bant enchantments is my second favorite 3 color choice. Have enchantments all over the place is cool. All though I've said blue is my least favorite color my next favorite 3 color is grixis . I love Nicol Bolas and all of his planewalkers. I also love the weird grixis cards. They are all very unique.

I've never built a 4 color deck or a 5 color deck.

But if I had to build one 5 color deck it would be Child of Alara .

So that's me in a detailed nutshell.

While I approach deck building from the theme-side of the fence, it seems like black and red are present in MANY of the decks. Back in the 90’s I loved goblins, though, so if I needed to pick just one I would probably have to choose red. Lots of fun themes and mechanics!

seshiro_of_the_orochi: Twenty lands? Probably not. I like creatures more than lands. But 20+ mana? That feels good.

My favorite color is probably , as I love me some graveyard value decks, but more even than that, I love multicolor cards. A lot. Sisay, Weatherlight Captain is my favorite deck of mine by far- it's got my two favorite things about commander: quirky multicolor cards and politics.

July 31, 2021 2:15 p.m.

Lanzo493: So you'd spent 10,000 mana and 10,000 more? And you'd cast Hydroid Krasis for 10,004? (I'm not messing with you, but I'm quoting a Youtubee who does MtG song parodies. Maybe take a look?)

I actually have the opposite problem. I can’t play red no matter how many other colors I splash, in any format, unless it’s a very artifact heavy theme (such as voltron or just straight artifact value).

  1. Can't resist polymorphing my tokens into fatties, casting very unusual sweepers that reorganize the game, or playing with damage that doesn't require combat only. Much parallel anti-control
  2. Life loss effects are great, death abilities are great
  3. Keeps decks aggressively on curve. Bomb parallel anti-control

Love chaotic, full-board games for everyone. Color combos that make chip damage matter, punish control, punish 0 board-state, force action, thrive with variance & wrecked plans.

  • Machiavellian table states are great
  • Punishing too much control is great
  • Chaotic, token trading, king of chip-dmg-matters, & resilient

More than 4 colors is not my thing, feels like it muddles the concept of identity at that point. WUBRG chase-cards in every set is REALLY not my thing, because even less identity.

Sultai life baby.

Or Simic life if talking about color pairs.

Not that anybody cares but, the decks I've never built are

  • all combinations of 4 color decks
  • and never built

Maybe there's more to gain from seeing what you have not built.

I feel that isn't who I am. The closest I'd come to building that deck would be and the cmdr would be Kykar, Wind's Fury and it wouldn't be spell slinger. It would be enchantments. And if it was spells it would be token go wide with Vicious Shadows as it's finisher

All of this data refers to paper magic.

For me, is definetly my way to go. It is quite rare that I´d build anything without it. So for color combinations: everything with green in it is good in my books, preferring maximum of two color combinations. Mostly because I suck at balancing out more than two colors XD

This is kinda weird, but I really like a lot of stuff Blue has to offer in terms of creature aesthetics and non-infinite combo/solitaire strategies.

I like how a lot of the Blue Zombies like the Skaabs look like wholly different and unique abominations of science, which exist in stark contrast to the boring regular Black Zombies. One of my favorite commanders is actually Stitcher Geralf despite the fact that he's objectively not that great.

I like Mutants, I'm a big sea creature connoisseur, Moonfolk are pretty neat, Crabs are top tier, and I enjoy the versatility of Shapeshifters.

I recently watched a Deck Tech on Blind Seer , and that made me look into all the weird and obscure jank that the color has to offer.

Probably one of my favorite enchantments has to be Dismiss into Dream because it just turns every single activated ability into repeatable creature removal.
