Random Combo Deck Build-Off
We are having a build-off with a random combo generated from Commander Spellbook.
If you wish to enter go to Commander Spellbook and hit “Random Combo” below the search bar. Comment below that you wish to enter and which combo you got. I’ll add you to the Participants list.
There are no prizes, this is just a fun challenge to help improve your deck building prowess.
Building time ends 5/23/2021 @ 12:00am PT.
- All cards must be EDH legal.
- Budget is $500 using low end of TCGplayer Mkt price.
- No combos over $50, if it’s more, re-roll to get a new one.
- No 5 Color decks. Reroll if needed.
- Building time ends on 5/23/2021 @ 12:00am PT.
- When building time ends, I will start a thread where you can post your deck in the comments and people can upvote the comments of decks they like.

Balaam__ I hadn’t planned on it, the site doesn’t have a way to change format legality, it’s just for commander. I suppose if there was a site with a similar function for a different format I could do it after this one.
3 of us got a combo involving Retreat to Coralhelm , never considered how many combos it must have. I’ve never built a green edh deck nor a lands deck so this is exciting.
Mtg_Mega_Nerds I’m jealous of that one, I was considering building Glissa in paper a few months back.

Yeah budget is $500, more expensive than any deck I’ve ever built. Lol
I’m done with my rough draft, gotta go through and fine tune it.
I’ve found it’s weird for me to build a deck above my usual budget range. Most of my decks are $250-$300. My Galazeth is gonna be $350 when I finish it.
I’ll see a card and be like “nope, already got enough $20 cards... no wait my budget is $500!”.

I usually use TCGplayer Mkt price because it’s where I buy my cards. It’s usually cheaper than CardKingdom.

Mtg_Mega_Nerds I feel like since this is a challenge, the restrictions should apply pretty definitively. Hardhitta7 what do you think? (this is your challenge ofc!) do you think we should choose which vendor the budget is to go by and set the 500 cap solidly there, or have this be more casual and just try and be close to the limit?

I think we should keep it pretty casual for now.
If everyone likes Card Kingdom we can go by that. I would like to stay as close to $500 as possible but I don’t see a problem being $8-$10 over.

I prefer using TCG personally and going with the low end of the range. Just wanting to know since we should have a consistent metric for everyone to follow.

Okay yeah I like TCGPlayer Mkt. Go by the low end.
Try to keep it as close to $500 as possible but going over a few $ isn’t a big deal.

For doing this outside Commander, every combo here is Modern-legal. And pretty much every combo would be Legacy-legal. Something like Pioneer or Pauper would be harder, but if the format has a big enough card selection, it seems doable.

That’s true, I would prefer legacy or modern to the other two.
I found another site that has a search engine for combos but selecting a format doesn’t seem to effect the “random combo” feature.
I can gauge interest in a non-edh one after this is over.
A Legacy one would have to have a pretty high budget.

As copied from the explanation of the random roll page:
Prerequisites
Dargo is one of your commanders
Dargo in the command zone
Three creatures on the battlefield
Thermopod and Desecrated Tomb on the battlefield
Steps:
Activate Thermopod three times by sacrificing three creatures, adding
Cast Dargo for
Activate Thermopod by sacrificing Dargo, adding and returning Dargo to the command zone.
Desecrated Tomb triggers, creating a 1/1 Bat token
Repeat from step 2
Results
Infinite ETB
Infinite LTB
Infinite storm count
Infinite death triggers
Infinite sacrifice triggers
Infinite commander casts
Infinite red mana
Infinite creature tokens
Since the rules have upgraded that commanders die, that means they hit the graveyard as you choose to send it to the command zone, meaning Desecrated Tomb sees it leave and creates a bat token. If this is not the case, and the combo is wrong, I can replace the Tomb with Impact Tremors or something, I planned on including that anyway ^^'

The trick is of course that sacrificing Dargo, the Shipwrecker to Thermopod will pay for its commander tax due to Dargo's artifacts or creatures sacrificed this turn clause, and the mana from Thermopod can pay for casting him again. But yeah, it needs the startup. Although Treasure tokens would work too, you don't need 3 creatures per se ;-)

I just noticed that the other two Retreat to Coralhelm sets here got lands that are on color. There's literally no reason for the in my Selesnya Sanctuary . All part of the fun... I wonder how many of the 9,000+ combos are Retreat + Bounce land + Tap for extra land + Landfall.

Rerolled once as the first combo I got was a $200 4 card combo, kind of defeats the object of the budget in my opinion.
Now I got Kodama of the East Tree + Emeria Angel + Boros Garrison .
That suits me, I rarely think about Landfall decks. Now I'll have to!

To be honest, I re-rolled two blue combos with Retreat to Coralhelm in them then landed on this one.

Everyone be careful when you are using the side bar to value your deck for the budget. Sometimes the API messes up and cards do not have a price and it is counted as $0. Sorting by price will allow you to see if any cards in your deck don't have a price. (I was looking at my build and noticed that I had gone way over budget because one of my pricy cards was not showing a price.)
