Decisions, decsions... where to go with the next build

Commander (EDH) forum

Hi all,

I've been building for Commander since I returned to MTG after a lengthy break - it suits my interest, enjoyment of deck planning and opportunity to play/friend group.

In order of 'good' I've put together so far:

a strong Omnath, Locus of Rage elemental tribal,

a sac-happy Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest which has some Eldrazi elements,

a mono-black deck developed from the 'Sworn to Darkness' pre-pack

My problem now is where to go next! I have a lot of fun ideas but I wanted some community opinions on what people like. Here are my ideas and restrictions:

Mono-blue with Jalira, Master Polymorphist at the helm - token generation, fatties and goodstuff

R/W - artifact/equipment heavy utilizing Metalcraft, probably with Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer up front for his ability but I'd consider Aurelia, the Warleader

Esper Blink - Sen Triplets would be the dream but a bit heavy on the pocket so suggestions welcome!

U/W Tax and control, I think I'd like Isperia, Supreme Judge here but would consider Grand Arbiter Augustin IV if I was taking it really seriously (again a bit hard to get hold of)

WUBRG Allies - utilising a lot of new stuff with, obviously, General Tazri

Other things:I don't really want to do tribal again unless it's Allies

Everyone wants to build as cheap as possible - but I'm up for investing more in some key cards where needed (like $20, not so much $50!)

A 75% build is fine by me

Would be really interested to hear your thoughts on fun and power levels, build style, expense, key cards and anything else you fancy weighing in on.Thanks

I love Anima, Soul of elements...

It's so much fun when you get an infinite combo, and you then just play infinitely cheap Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger... It can also be fairly cheap...

My favorite EDH deck is Selvala, Explorer Returned, where you play group hug and don't care as much about winning. A lot of the cards are cheap, at least in my current build (Things like Hunted Wumpus), and I always have a blast playing politics with it!

Erm, my Animar deck is my most expensive deck . . . because I can't justify not playing all the eldrazi titans.

If you go Temur, I'd say Riku is a fun deck to play and less expensive. It's pretty easy to go for just value ETB cards (Acidic Slime, Woodfall Primus, Eternal Witness etc.) and ramp. Or else you can build control with extra turns, red sweepers, and fewer win cons. I'm currently building full clones, which has been enjoyable, but is super pod-dependant.

Key cards I'd say the green hate cards I mentioned, Feldon of the Third Path and Soul of the Harvest if you go creature-based, Counterlash I've loved for controlling builds with just a few big win-cons, Green and Blue zeniths are must haves.

On your own ideas, I think the Azorius deck would be the most fun branching out of play-style for you. I've seen hard-lock Augustus decks with Knowledge Pool, Omen Machine, Eidolon of Rhetoric, Curse of Exhaustion, Isochron Scepter + Orim's Chant , etc. that are a pain to play against but really fun to captain.

Also, who can resist these rulings.

Personally, I like Roon of the Hidden Realm at the head of an Ally Tribal.

I'm with Karns_Pyromancer. I was just telling a friend of mine, who had me order a tazri for him, to abuse blink abilities with allies. I told him if he's set on having tazri as commander, at least run Roon in the 99.

Roon seems like a cool idea, he'd probably go in the 99 for me as I'd try to go 5 colours.

What do you all think about the quality of Allies, are there enough good ones to fill out a 100 card deck? If you don't include shapeshifters and whatnot?

I think allies could be pretty solid. You got all the old and new allies to choose from. If it were me personally, I'd chose 3 colors to choose allies from, and do support with the other 2 colors.

A friend of mine runs Roon Allies. Even the cheap ones like Sea Gate Loremaster or Hero of Goma Fada are really mean. Alchemist's Refuge is an all-star. There's even an infinite combo between Xenograft and one old green elf that puts out 2/2 wolves whenever an ally ETB's.

When it comes to blinking i always prefer Brago, King Eternal over Sen Triplets, Roon of the Hidden Realm or Lavinia of the Tenth. He needs very few synergetic cards to really shine. Going infinite, stax, etb exploits, he is very easy to turn into a beast.Even without stax and infinites as a more fun guy, my Brago - Either i'll get to have it or you lose it! deck is pretty successful in our cube.

A friend of mine built a Marchesa, the Black Rose deck a few weeks ago that is just plain crazy. If no one takes care of the graveyard at instant speed sooner or later she just cant be stopped.

Roon Allies sounds really fun too and isnt as overplayed as Tazri is atm.
